In the meantime, it is probable that consign- ments will be stored at Hongkong or Macao, and forwarded to Canton as the goods are sold. This will be attended with expense and delay, both of which it is desirable to avoid, and wo apprehend that a site for stores nearer Canton will become the subject of diplomacy between Ching and the representatives of Great Britain and the United States.
In the immediate vicinity of the factories there is not a foot of unoccupied ground; but it does not appear to be essential that a Merchant's warehouse should be contiguous to his dom cale. Could a few acres of land, with a water frontage, be obtained
