If the soundness and justice of these views and opinions be denied on reasoning and facts entitled to consideration, it is suggested that a commission of three disinterested men be appointed to report on the whole question, after examining Chush and the Consular porte,

The expense of this commission would be tri- fing and temporary compared with the large and permanent expenditure now being incurred from the British Treasury on the coast of China.

COMMERULAL INTELLIGENCE.

MANILA.

(From the New Weekly General Price Current, January 10.)

HEMARKS ON THE MANKET. IMPORTS.

Cotton Goods —Our market has not experienced any material improvenient since our last, and the difficulty of making sales continues both for plain and coloured Goods, except for new styles of the latter. The arrivals, of the Vizcaino from Hongkong, Bilbaino and Numanoid from Singapore within the last four weeks, has much increased the previous stacks, and it will take some time before an active demand takes places, as the shop keepers are cautious in their purchases for the reason abovementioned.

EXPORTS:

Sugar. As we have not received yet the October and November Mails, no new orders are to be exe. cuted, and there is no demand for the article. The arrival of those mails will coincide with the more accurate information regarding the new crop, and with the commencement of the first purchases of the raw material both which circumstances will fix the rates, and until then ous quotations may be consi- dered nominal, there being few or no purchasers for current quality.

Hemp Now commences the time for large ar- rivals, but no alterations in price is anticipated, the actual being $33 per picul unscrewed.

Rice The late rains have injured the crops a good deal in the neighbouring provinces, and prices are likely to continue firm throughout the year, oven without any demand for exportation.

THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE

Printen Calicos →Moderate sales have beɑn effected for export to Japan. Turkey red prints

atted at $6.50 per plece, and Handkerchiefs at 81-70 per dozen, Navy Blue Hdkfs. #1.10 por and bronze chintz $3.50 per piece,

EXPORTS.

TEA-The want of tonnage has limited par chases, and the stock of Congous in the market not more than 25 chops, all oi su inferior quality, The export to England in 1845 and 1846 was -

Of Green teas there is an abundant apply, it is thought that extensive purchases will be made for

the American market.

BILK.The export for the year is 12,046 balee against 11,700 in 1845. The Carib since the 31s! of December, has cleared with 2 248 bales which must be put with the export of the present year. The stock is moderato--but over 1,500 baldu sald and for sale against 3,500 bales at a corresponding period of the past year. The prices which now rule will not encourage the growers of Silk to seek a market fin Shanghai. We hear of 500 bales having been returned to an inland town to be sold for home consumption after having paid a transit duty of not less than £9 a bale,

OPIUM-Malwa is quoted at 8510 and Patna at $600. Stock of the Bengal drug 300 chests, bat of Malwa there is not less than 2.500 cheste on board the ships at Woosung. The opium dealers state that they have great difficulty in con veying their purchases into the interior from the rivers being infested with pirates. They also assert that the cultivation of the Poppy is becoming extensive in the neighbouring provinces in con- senquence of which there is less demand for the Indian drug.

FREIGHTS.-£8, and tonnage scarce, The Bonanza, Eleanora, June Prowse, Inchinnan, and John O'Gaunt load for England.

SHANGHAI,

Our advices are to the 16th Instant, and they communicate the progressive increase of the trade of the port, though it was checked in the early part of the year by the failure of the principal na tive Merchants. The growers of tea suffered large- ly by these failures, and in consequence, this season many of them have sent their lea to Canton for sale. It is estimated that the supply of black tea will be 90 chops less than that of the previous

season.

IMPORTS. COTTON GOODS-The stock in first hands is not more than 300,000 pieces, and it is understood that from which it would the dealers do not hold largely, appear that the heavy Importations of 1846 have sold for consumption. The ship 77 mostly been s chinnan from this port took up about 80,000 pieces of shirtings in addition to the stock named; but as the shipments from home are known to be limited it is thought that the supply will not exceed the Canton demand.
