If the conditions of the sale were on Monday so binding upon government as to render its interference unlawful, it is obvious that the same illegality atthea to evory sale advertised under the same conditions, Consequently any two men may attend each sale, and by bidding without limit, till the day clowns, or till the officera on duty are tired out, may prevent a aalo taking place,"

By the latter expedient they would have had the power to put a stop to a vexativus sucoéssion of manifestly absurd biddings, and by the former they would have confined the biddags among bona fide purchasers.-Calcutta Star,

A considerable improvement has at length taken place in the tone of the Tea market, and during the last few weeks speculative purchases have been effected in common Congous, comprising all those offering under 10d per lb, and it is probable these operations would have reached a large extent had Holders been willing to realize at market rates

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1846. TRE following remarks from the Telegraph of yesterday, refer to a notice which appeared in the advertising column of our Overland Summary, on the subject of the late opium sale at Calcutta :-

"We give prominent insertion, in our editorial columns, to the subjoined important communication in reference to the Calcutta Opium Sale:---

THE BOMBAY MARKET [From the Chamber of Commerce Overland Price Current] BONDAY, December 15th, 1846. The dulness which prevailed in our Import Market at the close of our last issue, has continued unabated throughout the fortnight. The unccatainty as to the result of the Calcutta Opium sale, which then interrupted all legitimate business, can scarcely set he said to be removed. The annexed extract from the Cal cufta Star of December 1st, will show the nature of the measures adopted by the sellers for account? in the Opum time bargains, to defeat the operations of their opponents and arrest the progress of the. Government Sale. How fir, however, the success of their plan may accomplish the object contcm- plated, and be legally sufficient to quash the time- bargains in which they were involved, seems to be a matter of doubt, involving legal questions of no small difficulty, and which may give rise to litiga- fion between the parties interested. Whilst, how ever, there is still sufficient uncertainty existing in respect to these matters to keep up in some measure the prevailing distrust, and divert merchants from their usun! nad legitimate dealings, a respite at all events has by the events in Calcutta been obtained, and the impending serious consequences which we before wrote of, as exciting much anxiety through- out our native mercantile community, have been for a time averted. The account of these events having however only reached us a few days ago, there has yet not been aufficient time for the excite. ment connected with them to subside, and chiefly therefore in consequence of them, there has during this as in last fortnight, been but little business do- ing in imported goods.

We borrow from the Bombay Contleman's Gazello another article on Opium gombling. The scene which occurred on Monday at the Exchange, as described by us yesterday, will, perhaps attract the attention of many to the subject, who would otherwise nevor have given it a thought. It was cer teinly a bold and original idea of the parties concerned to prevent the sale from taking place by occupying the whold day in bidlings for one lot, which, of course, neither of the bidders had the least intention of buying. Their scheme has been so well carried out, that they have escaped even the depoen, insignificant as that would have been compared to the amount which the gamblers had as stalso for the lot not We need not point out to you that by the terms of the advertisement you are bound to put up and having been knocked down, the deposit could not be claimed.

Common Twankays continue almost unsaleable, and as the present prices of Young Hysons will prevent their being taken for Home Consumption, it is to be feared that they will continue depressed, unless the low prices should induce speculation in antici- pation of the Spring demann for Canada. Common Young Hysons continue to be taken freely, and although the stock is very large, the statistical re. turns shew so great an increase of consumption as to ensure a continued good market for them. The finest sorts of this as well as of all other Green Tens continue to command a ready sale, whilst the commoner descriptions have been comparative- ly neglected. In common Hysons very little busi mess has been done, and prices must be quoted Id per lb lower. What regulations will be made we cannot any but we approband it will not be difficult to frame such as will effectually prevent another trick like that we have been referring to. As no sale took place, we conceive that it is quie compatent to the Coverument to order that the one which was to take place on Monday should be held to- morrow if they please, under such rules as they may deam requisite to guard them against the repetition of such hum hug as that practised on the former day, and to protect the interests of the fair trader.

We yesterday mentioned our fatention of saying a few words more na to the first opium sale of the season, which had such an alarming upearance at ite commencement, and ended so ridiculously. A stranger arriving in Calcutta on Monday morning might have thought that the government was approbemive of a rebellion.
