(in lieu of that arranged to be held in the first week in January recording Ruin, XXXV.) for the purpose of receiving a report and abstract of the accounts and general of. airs of the Club for the past year, together with an estimate of the receipts and disbursements for the ensuing year.

9th, That any Member leaving China, shall cease to be a Member, and must withdraw under the pro› visions of Clause No 8: Nevertheless, this Clause shall not extend to any Member who through it. health or other cause may be obliged to leave the Country with the intention of returning within a certain time. In such case the regular payment of his Subscriptions may be made by an Agent during sale by, his Absence according to the following scale: For the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Months commencing on the first Monthly Payment following such departure from China, a Sum of 82.50 cách Month in addition to the fixed amount of Subscription: on the 4th, 5th, and 6th Months a further additional Sum of 32.50; on the 7th, 8th, and 9th Months a further additional Sum of $2.50; and the 10th, 11th, and 12th Months a double amount of Subscriptions, and for every consecutive Month after the period of twelve Months as aforesaid an amount of three Subscriptions to

In the first place our settlement at Hongkong, although for some time it appeared likely to enjoy many years of romarkable prosperity, is at present in anything but a promising state, We have reason to believe that unless there soon be a change in the position of affairs, the island will be abandoned by many of the most influential residents. There is na doubt but that a great deal has been done to în jure the chances of its continued prosperity, by means of the foolish iden which has been so obistine ately adhered to, of raising a revenue from such a settlement, and we cannot say how much more evil has been caused by the innumerable mistakes of Sir John Davis's administration.
