Taking a lower and more material view of these events, it is manifest that Sir John Davis must have committed a great blunder, to have brought himself into his present dilemma, and the blunder of one. authority is a crime. The prestige of his official position is lowered-his usefulness la impaired.

The above is the latter we refered to last week, and which in the exercise of the discretion left to as we now insert. Fair Play we suspect is a lit te sudicted to a too cammon infirmity, of using generalities which have a formidable sound, but prerea mihil. We have nothing fo add to our former note regarding the Governor's absence in the North during the late disturbances at Canton, except to express surprise at the engerness with which Fair Play returns to the charge which we are confident few people are inclined to consuler a grave one, overlooking, at the same time, that if matters at Canton were then in so criticnt a state, that it was criminal in Flis

to do with it That trade will go on somewherum. and the houses connected with it alone have the means of following it wherever it may lead them. At present they have receiving ships at Cuinsing- moon, Namoa, Arnoy, Ch.moo and Chinchew Bays, Chusan, and Woosung. At Camsing moon opium is delivored to the smuggler, who has previously bought ani paid for it at Canton At all the her places, except Woosung, it is sold on board ship; at Woosung the deliveries are principally to the or ders of the merchants, who sell it at Shanghai Thus a large portion of the opium sold in China is first discharged at Hongkong, whence it is sent to the various stations on the coast, as required, without beng in any way affected by the farm
At the time the farm was first proposed at Hong kong, the local press distinctly foresaw the conse quences; these have been the abandonment of the colony by all the wealthy Chinese who were dealers in opium, carrying with them all the demand for manufactured goods and other products, which had previously existed, and was the true cause of the imx- pelus g ven to building on the island,

The Chineso merchants at Canton, who purchase from th importer and sell to the consumers may, when they please, by combination, while the trade is as nv, solely at Canton, prevent the consumption of man factured goods being accelerated by any to duction of prices caused by an accumulation of parties alto stocks, as at present in China. And it is to be mo- ticed, that the trade returns you refer to give the quantitis which have paid duties, which may, not at present be considered as having been delivered for consum tion.
