of Toadyism.

We had no frour to eurry with the high end mighty magnates of this unfortunate Colony, mor had we any grievances to complain of at their hands, consequently, had we been so inclined, could have had no motives for an unjust verdict, for I believe, i ganemily allowed, that no man, however bad his inclinations may be, sina without à motive. ~~~~Thu Arion, no doubt,is folly Thderstood by the

champion.

The article in question, states, that the men against whom we returned a verdict, were engaged in a legal pursuit. Way I ask the Edkor, who appears to be overflowing with legal knowledge, whether he would consider it a lawful act for a rabble to ester bis house, beaded by a common Policeman, and without warrant or authority to ransack his pre- mises-acch was the case in this unfortunate and murderous affair. It would have been easy to ob taid a warrant from a Magistrate, if they bad p- plied, but even this would not have legalized their firing on the Boat, as some of the parties, against whook the verdict was given, did,

As for judging of the guilt of the Chinese, fron their having leaped overboard, is it to be wondered at that they should do so, after having been fired on thrice, and having good reason to suppose that their puraners vere either seeking their lives or going to accuse them of some crime, from which it would have been impossible to clear themselves, before the Soloms of Hongkong. As for the elabo rate calculation: about the number, and occupations of the tren who were in the boat, (altho no debt it bes caused a vast consumption of the midnight taper) it is really too ridiculous to notice for a

moment.

But to stating that the verdict was signed by the Jury individually; I beg most distinctly to say that in this, the Champion, as in many other instances, economises the truth must woefully; but so much has been said on the matter, that it is almost super fluous saying anything more.

I can but regret that the Hon'ble the Chief Jus- tice, bas declared the Inquest informal, in coUSE- quence of some of the witnesses examined having been at the time prisoners,

ners, altho legally so, or in consequence of the parties implicated having been vorn and has therefore set aside the verdict, but of this I think the Chief Magistrate has but little to boast, feeling convinced, that there is scarcely an Impartial man in the colony, but is fully satuled of the fatness of the verdict,

I am, Mr Editor.
