THE CUSOEN TESTIMONIAL: PARMIUME YÜZ
AGITATION.
Our support for the Cobden Terimonial ha been asked, and we are not disposed to wur
hold it; since we respect the disinterested real of these who asit, and fully recognize the value of Mr Cobden's services. The request has put us upon looking a little more closely into the fact of the case, and into the nature of effect in general of such premiums for irregular pub- lic services.
First, let us correct a miste impression which a former paper of our* is ankely to have amparted. We naderstood at that time that Mr Cobden was a very wealthy manufacturer --a cotton lord," who was willing to devote big time to the public service in the saine way and for the same inducements as any other lord -that is to say, at his own expense, and for the sake of the fame. It appears that our no. |tion of his circumstances was at least exng.. gerated. The case with which Mr Cobden Obrained the leadership of the manufacturing world was due, not in any way to his standing in point of wealth, but to his coevdanding, power of intellect in the particular axir in hand. And bis devotion to the entreprise, it ap pears, has sensibly, impaired his resources. There is not a shadow of evidence that Mr Cobden regrets the sacrifice which he has made, but it is natural that there should be a public desire to indemnify him. For that purpose, the proposed testimonial, eves in the mooeyed form lo which we et firm objected, as just and proper.
But when it is proposed to extend such do..... natives to other objects sad other paracas, we are brought to a pause. One ground on which we have beard the money-testimonial advocat- el is that it would be so advantageous 16 secure
There is Mr Cobden as a public servant. nothing before the public to show what would be bis value in other public questions besides that which he had mastered. He possesses a very acute and vigorous understanding, it is not so certain that it is very comprehensive in its grasp. Some things in his conduct raise doen's in our minds; and, jodging for ourselves only, we must see what Mr Cobden does on other subjects before we can estimate his services in anything but Free-trade agitation.
Supposing that he were available in all mo- velments, what would be the effect of my big such a retainer for future services! would place him in a position to cast about for other opportunities to display his real, and might induce him to make opportunities where they did not exist. It would establish um 1 a professional promoter of aptal make it his interest, or at least na duty to some disturbing turmoil always turn him into an O'Connell And example it would be to other men en perhaps, but not less active. honest! The zult should only be allow work dan never for the fatt
