An untoward" affair occurred on Wednes day, which resulted in the loss of four or five lives, and the wounding of about twenty men.

The particulars, vo far as we can get at them, are simply these.

A coolie from Hongkong was rubbed by a party of Chinese, near a small village on the opposite side of the harbour, of the surd of $15 with which he was on his way to Cowloon to purchase stock for the Compra- dore of the Mess of the 18th Regiment-this. M. T. 8. Alligator, Master Commanding King H. M. S. Minden, 2nd Master in charge Outer, was on Tuesday. The Coolie applied to some,

During the night Bangalore, Aiton, several skirmishes took place, and on Wednes- day they mustered-on both sides--about 200 men. H. M. Ships Festal, Wolverine, and Vulture are anchored within half a mile of Fite scene of action. On Wednesday forenoon. it was reported to the first Lieutenant of the Vestal that the village was attacked by pira Averages. He at once sent an armed party ashore, 1,252, 8.5 making a signal for the Vulture and Wolverine In all about 80 men were to do the same.

We may be charged with conceit, but we cer tainly take some credit to ourselves for expo- ing the proceedings of Acqui-and his Cruiser His Excellency unquestionably was in total ignorance of the existence of the pernicious craft, which, dignified with the perence of a European policeman for nearly a year swayed despotically over the native res- sels that come here to trade. We believe that the Governor has issued a chop of a cmost stringent character, strictly prohibiting all enter ference with the Junks, except by the Elarbour Master who has them under his protection and no man will suspect him of sinister matwes in carrying out the instructions he has receive

We certainly regret that example was not made of the fellows lately taken up on e charge of rubbery, but we are satisfied that their Master will caution them against a repetition of the crime, as the Chief Justice is not always, in such an indulgent humour, and at times does not stand so much upon mere legal panctilio as on the occasion of their trial,

landed from the ships of war. The larger body of the combatants took flight when they saw the files Jackets, and about 10 look refuge in two houses near the village. Under the jin+ pression that they were pirates, the Seamen were ordered to dislodge them, in which ser vice four or five Chinese were killed, and about 20 wounded-soms of them severely. The whole party were captured and examined by Mr. Hillier, when the true state of the case was made evident.

At the time the affair took place a salt Junk was at anchor near the shore, where she had been taking in ballast. Believing one party to be pirates, it fol- lowed that this must the their barque, and orders were given to capture her, which was done. The Caplain and crew were also examined by the acting Chief Magistrate, and established their innocence. To add to the absurdity of the whole affair, our gallant Jacks were aiding the aggres sors; thinking they were capturing blond thirsty pirates, they were rescuing thieving ras

from punishment. The whole affair is farcical in the extreme, and were it not for the lives lost, it might provoke a laugh.
