ductions of this kind are common on the Canton river, and in the neighbourhood of Ma cao, though seldom accompanied with persona violence,

We have not had an earlier opportunity of publishing Her Majesty's letters patent ap- pointing commissioners to hold admiralty juris

cou within the colony of Hongkong The Commissioners, are the Governor, the Chief Justice, the Military Commander, the Colonial Secretary, the chief Magistrate of polios, and flag officers, or Captains of ships of war in the harbour. Either of these Commissioners can ex- shige and commit parties charged with piracy. The criminals require to be tried before three of them, of which number the Governor ar Chief Justice must be one. The prisoners have the benefit of a trial by Jury.

VIGNOLIA, WEDNEJDAY, MAY 27TE 18185

We confess that we are puzzled by the tech. nical phraseology of the document, denuded of which, we think it provides for a court har

the neighbouring waters, and that the Com. missioners we have named are intrusted with the duty of presiding over the court, not fewer than three being present, including the Governor or Chief Justice, and that the esta- blished form of trial is that by Jury.

We have heard parties complain, that ther; was no admiralty jurisdiction in Hongkonge and whether the letters patent fully provide for such a court in all its branches we are at a loss to tell, but will be happy to receive infor- mation from those who are more conversant with euch subjects.

PASSENGERS.

Monday was the anniversary of the storming of the heights of Canton by the British troops and Her Majesty's birthday happening this year noon Sunday, the usual demonstrations were reser ed until the following day, thus affording a of war fired salutes at noon, and in the evenings, double cause for public gratulation. The ships,

the troops were paraded, and salutes fired by artillery and musketry, the bands playing the national anthem.

His Excellency Sir Joha Davis, Major General D'Aguilar, and a large number of Civilians were on the parade ground, In the evening the houses at the foot of Pot tinger Street were illuminated.

The arrivals from the north have not furnishd us with any news of importance. At Shanghai trade is dull; the bankrupt Allum has returne.i to meet his creditors. It is said that the native creditors are dissatisfied, being under the in- pression that a preference has been given to foreigners.

It is to be hoped that such is not the case; and we presume that it is a mere ru- our got up by greedy claimants. The established custo:ns with reference to bankrupt estates are sufficiently well known, and we cannot believe that in this instance they have heen departed from.

We do not hear of any further disturbance at Foo chow-foo. H. M. Brig Espigle is an- one of you our Cominis chored near the town, and the tumbit pas to take such informations, subsided. But for an occasional riot, Foo-chiw commit for bail such persons foo would become
