walk up to the work. That's the question There are no longer any territorial disposes in Europe. Mr. Allen here reviewed the organisation of the five great powers of Europe-their parcelling out the territory, and dictaung ibe laws of the continent. Having all the businnes settled, they were now looking to external subjugation. The game was the plunder and the partition of other nations. Russia and England, two of the five powers, were monopolising Asia. England and France, two others of the fire powers, were now combined to a disgraceful invasion of an unoff wing people in South America England and France were seizing upon Africa; and not long since, the same powers were tampering in the affairs of Texas, as they are at this moment tampering with the domestic con- cerns of Mexico. What now is cur position ! The two continents of America, north and south, pre- sent us with some ten or fifteen independent go. veruments, and only one monarchy among them. (Brazil.) But this is not all-this is only the more agreeable view of the case We are presented with the appalling fact, that of all three independent governments that of the United States is the only Que of ibi competent to defend itself, and suc. cessfully to resist the powers of Europe. We are the only counterpoise on this contineat against the five great powers. Here Mr Allen recepidated the extension of Europeen usurpations in Asia, Af- rica, and Americe, and mid that, by family al linace with a royal bouse of Europe, the system of European monarchy, or the germ of it, was already planted and sprooting in this western bernisphire. The whole system of free government on this whole America, continent depends upon the United ould not go to war with the United States, single- handed, because she dared not do it. It was dOL for wast of courage, bat in apprehension of the con- sequences that England could not go to war with this country single handed. What were the cause. quence she had reason to ce evitably lose the whole of ber sessions. Ling the well toom of a war with tog United a senator reviewed the
