THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE

Come, then, my dear Keppel for there is plenty to do. for all hands. I have ordered a gno boat from her. Goldie to make our force stronger; and har I possessed rubbe one, the day before yesterday, I wou for the Badong today.

My regards to all 1 still propose Pepper 1 for your residence. I only wish I felt quite sure that For tube had it to store that you would be seen ouyarretark from China. That dame, however, seems to delight in playing me slippery tricks just at present and never was the time and tide so raised before, which would have led to lortane, as the other day. All the Queen's ships and all the Queen's wet could not bring such a chance in gether again. Ever, my dear Keppel, our sincere friend,

J. BROUEZ. "Captain the Hon. Henry Koppel The Dido and Phlegethon started on their ex- pedition against the pirates of Sakarran on the 5th of August. They were successful in des troying the villages of these ruffains, after a good deal of hard fighting, and much fatigue, the service being performed by boats, the river not admitting vessels of the Dido's tonnage.

It was on this occasion that Me Wade (wh whom may of us were acquainted) was killed, and we give Captain Keppel's account of the skirmish in which that gallant officer fell,

While our crew were busily employed cooking, Liate- nant Wade and myself fancied we heard the suppressed voices many people not far distant, and taking up cür guns we crept into the jungle, We had not penetrated many yards before I came in sight of a mass of boats concealed in a snug title inlet, the entrance to which had escaped our notice. These were filled with the piratical Dyaks and Malays, and on shore at various points were ourselves until the arrival of our forced without an placed armed sentinels. My first impulse was to conceal though gallant friend decaned otherwise; and no ticing the caution of my apheld hand, dashed in advance, discharging his gan, and calling upon our men to follow. It is impossible to conceive the consternation and coafu- sion this our sudden sally occasioned among the pirates. The confused noise and scrambling from their boats I can only liken to that of a suddenly-roused flock of wild ducks. Our attack from the point whence it came was evidently unexpected, and it is my opinion that they calculated on our attacking the hill, if we did so at all, from the nearest landing place, without pulling round the other five miles, as the whole attention of their scouts appeared to be direct ed towards that quarter. A short distance, above them was a small encapment, probably created for the conveni- ence of their chiefs, as in it we found writing materiala, two or three desks of English manufacture on the brass

plate of one of which, I afterwards noticed, was engraved
