ORIGINAL GRRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Friend of China.
Victoria, 14th January, 1816.
Dear Sir, The Circumstances connected with the death of the unhappy Contractor for the Officers Quarters and tho General's Homeo, made public by the Coronere inquest to which you have alluded in your three last issues, hova ex- cited universal attention mingled with regret for the sad becurrones and repugnance at the existence of the causes Jending to it. That a Chinaman of confessedly respectable standing, possessing intellectual superiority, and an appro ciating regard for foreiga advancement in Civilization and Science, esteemed by his countrymen beyond most of his campeeres-trikingly evinced by nearly all his workmen subscribing a portion of their limited pittance on payment of their wages by the Ordnance pay officers for the bereaved family of their late master together with the subscription now being made amongst the Chinese Compradors themselves for the sume object, with the respect entertained for him by those foreigners who had the best opportunities of judging his worth, ahould have been driven by the circumstances detailed on a paper found on his person, written by himself. paly a short time hofore he terminated his existence under doop mental anguich, his pen as he states recorded it with bis tears of blood, to such a frightful extrains of hopelessness as to take his own life, involve considerations the moral bearing of which cannot but be disastrous to this community, hwhile it is a foul blot upon our national charactor and will prove lastingly injuries to our intercourse with the Chines in so far as they associate the acts of ap individual with our Government; while at this partienlat juncture of general distrust, and as far as my knowledge reach, dislike to our go- *rument the event is truly unpropitious, the cording to found on the person of the unhappy Contractor, according to the translation I have of it, plainly states that the English officers changed the plan, that is, altered the execution of the work and added thereto what was not contemplated by the priginal Contract. Now this is a weighty accusation and if true, calle immediately for all the atonoment that can be offered to the bereaved family and the surviving parmera in the Contracts. If on the other hand it is a false statement it may be disregarded, beyond offering the contradiction of which it is susceptable. How stand the facts? is the ques tion. The Hongkong Register saya, upon the HIGHEST AU- THORITY, he has ascertained, that the statement is untrue!! The "Organ ・ whose Editor it appears was on the inquest, hitherto has remained silent on the subject, this latter cir cumstance may surely be regarded na somewhat ominique although it will excito no surprise with those who are fami. fiar with the reputation of this Journal. It may probably suit the immaculate Editor of the real Organ, to omit any refo rence to what is of public importance to disregard the ob. Tibuo duty of a public paper-the conservation of the public good by a just review at jcast of matters involving considera- tions like those presented in the unhappy affair under dis. cussion; it may also suit his purpose to prostitute his jourtint in echoing the sentiments of others, oven though these sonti. ments are gratuitous slander directed against the fair famo of individuals; it may suit such an Organ to make its columns the medium for diffusing miserable sophism and miere- presentation, and as is some recent instances offering scope under the flimsy covering of readily claining their paren. tago-to such effusions from a certain Soldier, already famed far more for scribbling than for war. But when in such a mixed community as 13 found on this Island the press-that otherwise great engine of public good—is thus anprincipled it becomes at once a bans and a curse. The. Contradiction the "Register" has given to the truth of the dying testament of the unhappy suicide, and to some particulars connected with it published in your issuce, is a matter requiring notice, and while without relieving the Editor of the Register' from the responsibility of sending forth, backed by mon KUTUONI. Ty, folde articles--I am ready to meet his statements, con. sidering that he inserted them with the ballef of their truth, the authority be alludes to having deceived him, and will join issue with the statements he has advanced, by sek Ing the Editor of tho▪ Register," does he know, that the identical stone Entablature which the deceased Contractor, with his dying hand wrote, that the placing it there in lieu of the brick for which be Contracted, with the nonpayment for it, was one essential causs way he destroyed himself- was not so, before the Editor of the Register with such un- asual effront, lent himself to libel the deed and contradict the living he aught to have ascertained. Does the Editor of the Register know that the Changing of the plan, i, e, altering the kinds of work, and imposing additional, never con. templated by the original agreement, was not done; Ås The Champion against the dead and the living, before he be ramo so, be aught to have cacermined. It is marvelous how an Editor of a generally considered respectabio Journal should, without farther proof than she bare word, of perlings the interested authority, insert a deliberato article congratu lating himself that the dying testament of the poor man was falso, and the statements on the subject in a Contempora poous journal were untrue also, But, Mr Editor I will tell tou a sad secret, and the Register and his IOE AUTHORITY may have the advantage of it. The dying testament of the Contractor is literally tree as it regards the altered and pulditional work, and the emtement denying it is Eterally falee, and besides this, the Register might have known if his 107 AUTHgoairy has any direct knowledge on the subu ject which seems very questionable, that the particular bolki. ing referred to is by no means an exception to the wrong the poor Chinese Contractors have received at the hands of the Commanding Eagacer. If the Register's sa UTHORITY flook know he may learn, that at the General's House the puthouses after completion of the printing as provided by the Contract, the Conteserer (now dead with his partner- monstrously absurd as it may appear bad, by order of the Comg, Engineer to repaint and grain in immiration of Rose Food and varnish, cook, knife, shoe and servants POOFD3, 43 you have stated in your paper of this morning. WONGEONT,
While on the subject of Canton, we would express our regret at hearing that so many Merchants are abandoning Hongkong entirely. Since the first of the month two firms have given up their establishments in this colony; other two, of old standing, have also determin- ed to leave the colony, and others are hesitat ing about following their example, or at most of leaving a Clerk in charge to forward goods or letters. This is very discouraging, but it is only what we have long anticipated. The wretched measures of this imbecile
