It for our readers to say whether the money
had not better have been thrown into the fire, than bestowed on a government whose mis taken policy has so seriously injured the co lony. Contrast with South Australia, the sum voted by parliaent for the various départ monts in Hongkong, which does not include the revenue legally and illegally raised in the colony, and we have yet another proof of the delusion of Her Majesty's government with re- ference to this island. The Survey and land department, with that of Public works, in a colony where 800,000 acres are actually sur veyed, and nearly two hundred millions still to be surveyed, and where numerous roads are making and bridges building, involves an ex- penditure of £2,573. Hongkong, an island eight miles long by four in breath, with scarcely an acre of arable land, supports a similar de- partment at an expence of £3,489. The police of South Australia, including a corps of mount- ed men on the frontier to protect the settlers from the aggressions of the aborigines, is rated at £6,835; that of Hongkong, with the assess- ment, cannot be less than £9,000.

The following Sonnet may not be uninteresting to our readers, as a specimen of Chinese literature. It is the production of a poet and scholar who formed part of the suite of the High Imperial Com missioner during his late visit to Hongkong, and was composed on board the Steamer on the way back to Canton. If the translation be not perfectly literal-allowing always for the difficulty of trans fusing one language into another-it will at least give a general idea of the imagery and sentiment of the original, and serve as a specimen of the court- ly feeling and agreeable flattery peculiar to the Chinese character :-
The white dews drop down on the fragrant but leafless trees; the sombre vapours rise up from the enchanted hills and valleys; and the zephyre soften with their sweet breath the gloom that overshadows the earth.
It is now, while seated beneath the tented canopy of the proud ship provided for our reception, that recall with tears the days that are past I have left my very bome; my heart grows cold; my robe flutters; I am as a man pierced with a dagger.
• I gave upon yonder royal white city, on the High cliffs, while the shades of evening gather round it. There it stands, lonely as a palace built upon a rock. The sun has disappeared beneath the waves, but my lingering eyes still turn to it with straining fondness. The southern stars that gleam upus its snow-white walls look beautiful and bright as glittering flowers.
And now I weep with bitterness, and as I sink upon my pillow, the splendid town is present to me still. I behold eren in my sleep the fragrant in censa urn dispensing its thousand gushing stems* over the mountains, while the city's white abodes seem glittering in the morning sun.
It is thus 1 treasure in my sorrowing soul the loved remembrance ; it is thus my monning heart clings to departed happiness, as the tendrils twine themselves around yon airy cliffs.
