Lind William Hervey has been appointed mi- nister plenipotentiary from the Queen of England to the court of France during the absence on leave of Lord Cowley. A surgeon, named Hawkins, residing in Hatton Garden, has has been commit fed for manslaughter. It appears that he attended a poor woman during her confinement, and used improper violence, in consequence of which the patient died. The will of the late Mr. Somes has been proved, and the personal estate sworn under 600,000-Portland Hay Market has been entire ly destroyed by fire-The Hon. Sho reports the Canopus, 84, to have beaten the other ships of the squadron The Kestrel parted with the squadron on the 24th ultimo, owing to having dis covered a serious leak of four feet, under water, for ward, which placed her in an alarming situation, as it was momentarily increasing. All the pumps were set to work, but could not reduce the leak, and serious thoughts were entertained of then being compelled to abandon her, the leak was stopped.

THE FIRE IN ALDERMANEURY.-The sacrifice of property upon this occasion amount to 20,000. The greatest fears were entertained for the secu- rity of the Guildhall, for the flaines extended to the rear of the Controller's residence. The beautiful stained glass of the eastern window was shattered by the interse heat, threatening the speedy des truction of the well-known colossal figures, Gog and Magog, that stand on each side, There being an excellent supply of water flowing from the mains in front of the hall, soveral powerful engines, well manned, were brought to bear on that portion of the fire, and at 10 o'clock the safety of the hall was secured.
