With reference to the last muutos explained that while the mos Instructor gave security against the cation being at any time broken off, of bad health on the part of the Te enabled them to make a division of labour, afforded greatly encreased facility for

the number of Pupils, a class of twelve or siteen requiring very little more labour that one of er or eight. An additional sleeping apartment is re quired for this purpose, the present being insuf ficient for those now in attendance. Were this in readinessno doubts are entertamed that Scholars would be found to fill it. All the water also requir- ed for the establishment must be carried up a steep hill, and in case of fire it would be impossible to save the buildings. The formation of tanks would therefore be very desirable. Whilst new TOOMS- for a Library, Dining room for the bora &c., would form a most valuable addition to the comfort of the

The President, Revd. Dr BRIDGMAN, on taking the Chair, remarked that it would be unnecessary for him to occupy any time in specifying the ob- ject and detailing the operations of the Society, as these would be sufficiently exhibited by the Re- port of the Trustees, which had been prepared and was now to be submitted to the Meeting He then after a few brief explanations in behalf of some who had been unable to be present on the Occasioncalled for the Report which was read establishment. In these circumstances it is hoped

The Treasurer's account was next exhibited,

showing a small balance in favor of the Society

The account will appear in its proper place, subjoined to the Report.

The following resolutions were now brought forward and adopted by the Society. On motion of the Revd. VINCENT JOHN STANTON, Beconded by JoNH CAIRNS, Esq.

Resolved That the Report of the Trustees now read, including that of the Revd. Mr. Baown, be approved and accepted, and that the same be published under the direction of the Trustees

On motion of PATRICK DUDGEON, Esq., second- ed by Ronnar STRACHAN, Esq.

Resolved That the course of Discipline and Education formed in this School by the Rev. Mr. BROWN, is highly entisfactory to the members of the Society and Gentlemen present, and that the thanks of the same be presented to him.

On motion of the Rev. VINCENT J. STANTON, seconded by CHARLES B. HILLIER, Esq.

Resolved,That in the estimation of the Bo- ciety the term of Eight years, is not too much time to be allowed for a full course of studies in this School, and the method of the Revd. Mr. Brown, hitherto fallowed in securing the consent of the Pupils parents to that effect, be and hereby is ap proved of, and confirmed.

On motion of UsosGE PRIT, Esq., seconded by

THOMAS HYLAND, Esq.

Resolved-That an examining Committee be appointed by the Trustees, consisting of not less than three individuals, whose duty it shall be to examine the School once every month, and to keep a full record of the same for the use of the Trustees. On motion of ROBERT STRACHAN, Esq., second- ed by JOHN CAIRNS, Esq.

Resolved,That as it is hip ly desirable to enlarge the Society's buildings so as to be able to accommodate at least twice the number of Pupils, a separate subscription he opened for that specific object, and that the Trustees be authorized to proceed with the erection of buildings as soon as the requisite means shall have been obtained,

The meeting then proceeded to elect a board of Trustees for the ensuing year, with auditors.

JOHN DENT, Esq. TW: LA MACKEAN, Esq.

Ma. Brown after apologising for the awkward- ness of being called on to report on his own proceedings and suggesting the propriety of an examining Committee, which was afterwards adopt- ed by the meeting, mentioned the advantages the pupils had derived from having an additional teacher. A most gratifying circumstance was the increasing confidence the Chinese had in the insti tution. Every previous year some of the children had been withdrawn by their Parents, before their education had proceeded so far as to be of much advantage to them. This has gradually diminish- ed and during last year none has been withdrawn. On the contrary Mr. B. related two anecdotes showing the alteration in their gentiments. A Father, whose three sons had successively at- tended the institution, stated that they could not at first understand why foreigners should support and educate their children, without any prospect of remuneration. This was so mysterious that scarcely believe but there must be some they could scarcely concealed sinister motive Now however said he can understand it. My children have learned we can from you nothing bad. The religion in which you have instructed them has made them better. I believe its truth, though the customs of our country do not admit of my embracing it. Another whose son had died, after attending his funeral, warmly thanked Mr. Brows for the attention that had been paid him, though deeply distressed at the loss of his only son, he expressed sympathy with Mr. B. that all the labour he had bestowed had been lost, and asked in case, he should adopt an« other, if he too would be received and educated in the institution.

One of the young men who went to Shanghai with Captain BALFOUR has returned with a letter, expressing satisfaction with his behaviour and thanks for his services. Another has been sent to supply bia place of whose conduct favorable counts have been received.

Mr. Blows then shortly described the course of instruction pursued in the different clases in English, Arithmetic, Geography, composition &c., to which has now been added music. This latter is keenly entered into by the pupils, and after it

the public will show the same liberality they have ever done towards this Institumor.

The examination of the Pupils was next pro- ceeded with Having previously witnessed their proficiency, we were not astonished at the attain ments they have made, though the readmess with which questions in geography were answered, and arithmetical operations performed (including dith- cult examples in fractions) by boys, who a few months ago knew not a word of the language in which these questions were put, was most credit able both to themselves and their instructors. The higher classes showed a corresponding pro ficiency in composition, and the only subject of regret we felt throughout the evening was, that the previous proceedings left eo little time for bring what they could do. For this reason too

essays written by the elder Pupils could not be read, but were merely handed round afford- ing an opportunity of judging of little more than the writing which was generally admired. Several specimens of their musical powers were also af forded, which gave much satisfaction. Altogether we feel justified in saying the whole exhibition was most gratifying to every one present.
