This must be to himself a very great comfort; but we sumbit to his con- sideration whether it is an apology fornegligence or dilatoriness in the performance of his duties, It is true, we are a long way from Europe, but complaints may even be wafted to London, and listened to, it may therefore be prudent to take a little friendly advice in time. We by no means approve of the lawless and brutal manner, in which a person holding no very high office under government, ordered a Corporal's guard to make a prisoner of the unfortunate Mr. Scales, who had refused to receive some letters sent after hours. It was an outrage upon decency, such as seldom occurs even in colonies in England it would have raised a shout of indignation from lands end to lands end. Neither can we approve, altogether, of the high handed measure of His Excellency, who suspended Mr. Scales from the duties of office, pending a reference to the home govern ment. That the Governor in Council has power to suspend any public servant there can be no doubt even the Chief Justice of he has a mind to do so-but is must be under extra-
