THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE,
rades. Never be guilty of a breach of trust. Nor betray confidence reposed in you. All other of fences may in time be wiped out and forgotten. but these scarcely ever, for having once forfeited the confidence of your officer, it is hard, very hard so regain it.
Abstain from all indecent, unchaste, and unman ly expressions. Nor countenance the utterance of them in others. They indicate a depraved and vititiated mind. Neither accustom yourself to swearing and using the name of God on frivolous and trifling occasions. It was said by a great min, that it was more from a habit of telling lics than from intentional lying, there was so much falsehood, in the would; I think, the same would hold with regard to swearing, at all events it yields no profit, and is a gratuitous vico.
Gaming is another evil practice which brings men into trouble and sometimes disgrace. To say the least of it, it involves a waste of time, begets | in those addicted to it, a feverish excitement of the mind, and consequently has a tendency to unfit a man for the sober and steady discharge of his duty; besides quarrels and disputes frequently arise at the gaming table which sometimes end seriously, Whosoever would do well for himself and enjoy the esteem and confidence of his officers, will take care not to be ranked amongst Gamblers.
But I would especially and above all, entreat you to be always on your guard against that insiluous enemy, that, greatest of all moral evils and the prolific source of all the trouble and crime in the army. Viz Drunkenness.
CEPTIBLE OF THE DELIORTS WHICH ARE ALWAYS TO
BE FOUND IN POALISHED SOCIETY (Ma consience).
Several toasts were given and speeclice made after dinner on the first day, every one of which seemed to come from the heart and were replets with good will and kindly feeling towards the re spective nations of the Plenipotentiaries, and of esteem and personal friendship on the part of others, amongst whom Admiral Cecile and Capt. Gratiate shone conspicuous.
It must necessarily be matter of regret to all on this side of the water, that our accommodations are so limited at present as to render it impossible for us to return Mons, Lagrenée's hospitality with similar splendour. (Large enough to give a decent dinner with neat wines. The gallant Frenchman, would expect nothing more); but of this let our French friends be assured, that it, as we hear itt um- oured, they intend to pay our gallant General a visit in October next, they will be received with open arms, and a hearty welcome.
His Excellency the Governor retured to Hong" kong on the 4th, after a passage of six hours.

REPORTS.
The Passidone, has been totally wrecked near Woosung,
Avoid then as you value your health and reputa t'on the Company of Drunkard's. Cirieve not your Officers and those interested in your welfare by addicting yourself to this bancful vice. No man becomes a Drunkard at once, Beginners do not in general like either the taste or smell of spirits. They are however not unfrequently led to think that it botokens a degree of Manliness to drink, even against their will, a glass of spirits in com- The desire to drink increases with the pany. practice. They acquire a relish for that which was formerly offensive, and then love drink for drink's sake. All the money they can collect is not sufficient to allay their thirst for it. They will barter for it health character and happiness.
The Island Queen, has put back, having sprung: and will go through fire and water to obtain it, you her main-mast. She will again sail for Bombay will sometimes hear such arguments as the follow-to-day. ig in favor of it. That it sharpenis the appetite, protects the Constitution from night dews and morning exhalations, and fortifies it against attacks of Endemic and Epidemic diseases, (by the former of these terms is meant such diseases as the inha. bitants of this Colony are specially subject to, as fvers agues &c. and by the latter such as occur occasionally and seize upon victims here and there as cholera &c.) Every man of experience and good sense will see the folly of these arguments and every medical man can testify that an indulgence in the use of ardent spirits produces a directly contrary effect. It predisposes a man to catch disscases, and instead of sharpening the appetite or fortifying the Constitution, debilitates and enfeebles the one, and blunts the other. Habitual drunkards do not in general live out half their days Every old Soldier can hear witness of the evil effect which this habt produces. Many who have retir. ed from the service on a reduced private's pension, might but for this folly be enjoying a Serjeant's.
The Bintang, was ashore in the Shanghai river, but has get off with loss of her false keel.
The Spanish Ship Bella Vascongada, has also been on a bank near Wogsung and has received, considerable damage,

In a word no vice degrades n inan so far, and none sinks him so low as, Drunkenness. My earnest wish is that you may never become a victim to it !.
Sheild your moral principles however, be so firmly fixed as not to need the above advice, yet if you be but stirred up by it to use greater diligence in avoiding this great evil, my object is attained, you are in the high road to advancement, But recollect from the moment your good conduct has heen so far noticed as to be rewarded with the first Chevron, accept of no situation, no matter how ensy or lucrative soever it may be, which would place you from under the eyes of your officers. A youngman in the beginning of his career should not consult ease. It is not the way to honor. Ap ply yourself diligently to the study of your drill book, it is the science of your profession. Attend to nothing else comparatively speaking. Leave the farmer to the study of Agriculture, the trades man to Mechanics, the Sailor to navigation, bearing in mind, that the Sollier who would arrive at disting- tion must study those things which almost exclu. sively appertain to the profession of Arms; and for better encouragement allow me again to call your attention to the fact that there never was & time when rewards were more profusely dispensed and liberally bestowed, than the present. Take for example our own Regiment where there have been no fewer than five Serjeants promoted to commissions in about as many years. Every obs-Spy, Pain, tacle disappears, and every difficulty vanishes before patient perseverance and steady good conduct
It only remains for me now to advise you to take care of your health. Never expose yourself to the sun unnecessarily, some men unthinkingly run out bareheaded to bring in a belt, n flannel or a cap case that may be drying in the sun, you can not do so with impunity: "A momentary exposure uncovered to the direct rays of the sun may pro- duce a fatal result. You cannot use too much caution and circumspection in a clunate like this. Exercise prudence-practise strict sobriety attend to the laws of health and (other chances being equal of preserving life) you have at least twenty to one against the Drunkard or the reckless or vick ous character:
fremain
Your sincere friend and well wisher,
