SUPPLEMENT OF THE FRIEND OF CHINA No 57.

The Ross-shire Advertiser states, that there is! a family of Dwarks, at Kishorn of Applecross, each of them of less dimensions than, Tom Thumb, and as well proportioned. They are the children of a poor cotter of the ordinary size. They are three

of in number, The eldest son, twenty years age, is two feet ten inches high; a daughter, rather younger, is still smaller; and a boy of fifteen is a mere pigmy.

The Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society met lately in the hall, Bruntsfield Links, for the election of office-bearers, when Archibald Marshall Esq., was unanimously chosen Captain for the year onsuing. The annual gold-medal was then played for, and was won, after a keen competition, by Charles T. Ellis Esq., Newton House. The So ciety after-wards dined in Goodsinan's, Captain Marshall in the chair.

The splendid improvements in Holyrood Park are carried on with increased vigour. That por- tion of the grand drive along the meadows is alre ady in course of formation, and will be completed in the course of the ensuing summer. The façade of Salisbury Crage has been cleared of the innu- merable loose stones formerly scattered thereon, and the rudely-constructed whinstone dykes, which intersected the royal park, with all their break-neck accompanients of steps and styles, are fast disap- pearing. The continuation of the grand drive by Samson's Ribs, above Duddington Loch, and round the eastern skirts of Arthur's Seat, to the east end of the Duke's Walk, will, it is said, be proceed with immediately, and completed without any further interruption.

She is to be razoad like the 'Dedalus'; her quarter deck and forecastle bulwarks will be cut down, some of her main deck parts will be clos- ed up, and others enlarged. COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

The salt manufactures of Cheshire are endeavouring to in- dnce the East India Company to alter their system of sup A correspondent of the TIMES says On a late occasion, plying India with salt. At present that sold by the com. when in the United States, I visited the State dockyard at pany's agents is coarse, dirty, and impure. It is supposed New York, and was shown over the ship 'Columbus, armed

to cost the company about 31. a ton, and is retailed at 121. with 80 guns, all long 42-pounders, with Paixhans clinbera, 108, raising à revenue of some millions sterling. Now, Ox. throwing, therefore, a broadeide of 1,650 lb., nearly equal in

The following Mates have passed for Lieutenants at the Naval College-E. Webber, Excellent'; E. A. Blackett, Inte Harlequin'; C. Vesey, and T. T. Hambly, late 'Bel- videra,*

In the trials which were instituted by the Admiralty between two vessels, to test the qualities of the screw-pro- peller Rattler an the paddle.wheel 'Alecto, the superiority of the 'Rattler has been fully shown. In one of the trials which took place on the 30th of March, during a perfect calm, from the Little Nore to Yarmouth Roads (eighty miles), the 'Ranler beat the Alecto 934 minutes, although the 'Rattler,' in consequence of a short supply of steans, was compelled to work the second grade of expansion through. eat the day, and the engines only 234 to 24 strokes per mi. nuto. On arriving at Yarmouth Roads they started again, both vessels having all sails set to a moderate breeze. They continued running unnt of Cromer Light, when the 'Rattler,' in 34 miles, beat the 'Alecto' by 11 minutes. But the most conclusive results as to the screw superiority were proved when the vessels, being fastened to each other, with their heads in opposite directions, the 'Rattler towed the 'Alccto, in spite of all her attempts to run away astern, at the rate of two miles and a half an hour.

THE LIGHT FOR ALL NATIONS.-Dear Sir-I have the sa. tisfaction to inform you that I and any workmen have taken possession of our residence in the round house on the sum. mit of the column for my new light on the Goodwin, and it is my intention to reside here until I have succeeded in as. certaining the strata beneath the sand, should the weather continue favourable. That being done. I shall proceed to complete the lighthouse by fixing the lanthorn.

I think I may fairly state that another inhabited island is Dow added to her Majesty's dominions, in the bowels of which are embedded great treasures, and which will form nucleus for batteries and fortifications, as well as for a har bour of refuge in Trinity Bay in the Downs, and thus form a second Gibraltar.

As so many unfounded reports have been in circulation respecting this undertaking, I will thank you to send this information to the London journals.I am, dear sir, your

PS. I have commenced boring to ascertain the substrats of the Goodwin, and, at fifty feet beneath the platform have found nothing but hard sand, nearly as solid as rock itself EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM HER MAJESTY'S SHIP ESPOIR, DATED Dec. 16, 1844. On the 20th of September, at 8 30, saw a sail from the mast-head, which we thought had the appearance of being the armed telucca, so well known to our cruisers on the coast The wind being very light, Lieut. Seccombe volun- teered to make her out, and a light beat was accordingly At nine, p. m., be returned given to him for the purpose with his prize, and reported that after pulling nearly eight hours he came up with the chase, which hailed and ordered him to keep off, at the same time laying in her sweeps. This was answered by a cheer from the boat's crew, consisting of himself and the crew of a four.oared, gig who instanty board. ed over the boarding netting, and found themselves on board the Spanish felucca Nose, with a crew of thirty-one men, well armed with muskets, and having eight saival guns mounted, a long 18-pound er mounted on a pivot amidshipe having been thrown overboard during the chase. The crew suffered themselves to be disarmed, and a breeze springing up Lieut. Seccombe took the helm and steered for the Es Por, keeping his men (who were well armed) by his side, satil he rejoined his skip, to the surprise and admiration of all on board.*

Average. Highest. Lowest. Patna, 1,590 1,560 1,574.4. Benares, 1,480 1,455 1,462.2.9 The Patna was, as usual put up in two divisions, the 1st of w ich opened at Rs. 1,560 and at this rate 30. lots were taken by the first bidder, the suc ceeding lots went up to Rs. 1,580 declined again to Rs. 1,625, and finally re-advanced to Rs. 1,590, at which this division closed, the greater portion of it going into the hands of Shippers.

The 1st lot of Benares was taken at Rs. 1,480, but immediately afterwards declined to 1,460, when 50 lots were taken at once by a Shipper, which gave firmness to the bidding, and with the excep tion of a few lots, which went at Rs. 1,455 the re- mainder went off at between the above rate, and 1,485 Rs, about 600 chests were taken for Ship. ment, the remainder going into the Bazaar.

The 2nd division of Patna opened at Rs 1,570, at which 400 chests were disposed of in two of three bids, when it rose to Rs 1.575, but immediate ly again declined to Rs. 1,570, and with the excep tion of 10 lots at the close, the whole division was tiken at this rate.

It was generally expected that this sale like the last would go high, but like the last the result has exceeded expectation. The competition for the 1st division was chiefly amongst Shippers, the Bazaar Dealers onlp bidding sufficiently to keep up prices, in which they were eminently successful; but for the 2nd division the competition was less, and the greater portion of it went into the Bazaar. whole of the Patna, about one half has gone into the Bazaar.
