SUPPLEMENT OF THE FRIEND OF CHINA No 53.
ham and Lieutenant Philpots, out of the 140 armed men in the stockade, soldiers, sailors, marines, and inhabitants, a party to charge the natives stationed benind, the Barracks. He received no answer from either Mr. Beckham or Lieutenant Philpots. He thon sung out for Volunteers! Six men stepped for ward. With these, us preceeded to the Barracks and drove off the assailants, some twenty in num ber. He left the six men there well covered. But as soon as Mr. Hector was gone away, the natives returned, and dislodged the six men. Mr. Hector then brought one of the guns to bear upon the Bar- racks, and once more cleared them. About seven or eight of his men the drove the natives further up the hill. They kept their station this time,
During the engagement Mr. Hector fell short of ammunition. He went down to the stockade, and obtained four bags of loose powder. The women gave him their garments to make cartridges, and his gunner and others gave him their shirts. The cartridges had to be made of the loose powder, while the muskets, were blazing away. No wonder the stockade was finally blown up, when loose powder was thus lying about, and cartridges sufficient for such a paltry engagement had not been previously made, or at all events could not be got at..
The engagement continued until about half-past ten, when the natives hoisted a flag of truce, and ceased firing. Pumuku was killed,~~-
At this time the town was still in our possession. The enemy were evidently weary of the contest. Now, therefore, was the time to make terms with the two surviving chiefs, one of whom, from having taken no part in the engagement, save taking pos session of the chief blockhouse and flagstaff, being evidently disposed to an amicable arrangement. He would have stipulated that the flagstaff should not be erected any more; that being promised, he would no doubt have withdrawn his party. Kowitti and the successor of Pumuku would have been puci fied with some presents, after Heki häd returned home, If not, there would have been 200 British against 400 Natives, the former supported by two guns and a man-of-war,
After the flag of truce was hoisted, Mr. Hector
he must hold the battery and block-house, all night, at every extremity. Mr. Hector promised to do so,

without-a-summons from the enemy to do so,
Annoyed at the termination of the affair, Mr. Hector proceeded on board H. M. S. Hazard, and made a distinct offer to Lieutenant Philpots, then on board, to retake the place with 40 men. No heed was given to the proposal.
To complete the absurdities of the day, H M. S. Hasard, then in command of Lieutenant Philpots, fired on the natives when the latter entered into the town after our people had abandoned it. If it were intended to renew the engagement, why not, after all the woman and children were safely embarked, go on shore like men and charge the Natives once more? If this could not be done, why exasperate and increase their vengeance by firing a few paltry shots? No wonder the Natives, as conquerors, gra- massacred any straggling Europeans after this tuitous insult. This foolish prank was repeated the next day! And it took place when many of the inhabitants were actually ashore, shaking hands and making friends with the natives, to induce them to give up their property. Of course these Europeans were glad to run for their lives when the firing re-commenced, and finally to abandon all hopes of recovering their little property.
On Thursday, the 13th, the beach was lined with canoes, and also with the boats taken from the iu- habitants, all of which were loaded with plunder. The Hazard's guns could have cut these boats to pieces. The launch with its big gun could have done the same. Now, here was a sound reason for renewal of hostilities namely, to get back our own, But it was not done.

Sticklad has long been scarce, we no. tice a small import during the week. In Cotton nothing doing.
FREIGHTS.-Tonnage is still wanted for China. The Teazer will return from Singapore en route to Madras. "The Queen" has arrived from the Clyde London. The Ann from London and the Mary and loads Sugars, Pepper and the finer Spices for
Eliza, Welcome and Countess of Durham from the Clyde are shortly expected. The Amazon is load- ing for Calcutta, and the Annunchunder likely

(From the Bombay Times, May 17.) We beg to recommend to the notice of our readers the report which appears in our present issue, of the proceedings at the recent Meeting of Proprie. tors of the Bank of Western India. The resolutions passed were of very considerable importance, as will be seen from the statement to which we allud-at ed. There is to be a London Board of Directors, which will enable the Institution to avail itself of the benefits of the new Act relative to Joint Stock Companies-the Capital employed is to be double-demand will be soon over. and the name of the Bank itself is to be changed, the new appelation being "The Oriental Bank" Generally speaking, we think it a bad plan to alter the names of public Institutions; but in the present case, the change appears necessary if only on the score of accurate description, since the Bank, doing business in Calcutta, Ceylon, and China, as well as in Bombay should hardly continue to be correctly stiled the Bank of Western India. The London Board is to consist of our late Governor, Mr. An- derson, Dr. Kennedy, Colonel Spiller, and other gentlemen well known in Bombay,” We may men- tion, that since the Meeting a very considerable rise has taken place in the value of the Stock of the Bank, the shares having be up to 50 per cent. yesterday.
