At a meeting of the Free Presbytery of Glasgow, Dr. Chalmers, alluding to the rumour that the Sustentation Fund is going down, spoke as fol- lows:-1 hold in my hand a paper, furnished me by the Treasurer to the Sustentation Fund, giving an account of the receipts during the half year from May to November, that is, for six months after the last Assembly; and he calculates that, if the receipts come in during the winter half of the at the same rate as they did during the summer half of the year (and they come in at a faster rate during the winter than the summer half, then the total amount to be received through the medium of the associations alone will be 70,2207, 18s. 1d Now, compare this with the produce of the asso, ciations last year, from May 1838 to May 1844, and I beg you will recollect that there was a great number of associations last year than this. I will presently explain the reason of this: In point of fact, the number is not so great as it was last year, and therefore the produce of this year ia from a smaller number of associations than the produce of the former year. In 1813 there were 800 as sociations; now there are 756. I have yet ano ther paper here, stating what was the produce of these 800 associations throughout the whole of the twelve months from May 1843 to May 1944, it was 50,1934 Now, there is every reason to believe that the whole sum which will be received from the associations, from the Assembly of 1814 to that of 1845, will be 70,2201, making a diffe Mr. Gray, Rector of the inverness Academy, rence of 20,0001, more received through the asso- has been elected Professor of Natural Philosophy ciations than last year," at Aberdeen.

The interesting case of Dr. Kalley engaged attention at the evening diet, after which Mr. Jaffray, in bringing forward the state of the Mis sionary Funds, said, that without entering into details, he would state, what must be gratifying to all to hear, that the Board were not only likely to be in a position as good as they occupied last year, in respect to resources, but that up to this moment they had received considerably more than the total revenue reported last year. There was one point. nevertheless, which the board had still to deplore, and that was that in the reports of the collections too many blanks existed. He hoped that a voice would go forth from the Commission, which would be regarded by the congregacious throughout the country, so that before the accounts closed, this evil would be abated.
