fellow and Blue. The Boats were well started and kept well together till they rounded the turning point indicated by a Boat anchored mile and a half down the river. But as they again neared the schooner the "Peucl" was observed to shoot a head of the cluster and maintained a forward position to the end winning by about a dozen yards. Next arrived the gay Zebra atraining every timber as she skimmed along the tope of the waves, the Nonsuch and Catty sark close behind neck and neck. The others had got too far to leeward and reached not the Kelpie for some minutes after.
The victors were much pleased with the handsome prizes awarded and the Chinese generally entered heartily into the spirit of the race, sporing their blunt freely on their favorite Boats

Our contemporary of the Singapore Free Press is, we fear, in a very bad way he is evidently bilious and excited. Last summer a veracious scribbler, who subscribed himself J. W. from London, proclaimed to the world through the columns of the Free Press, that amongst the British community in China there was neither banour, honesty nor loyalty; another equally veracious writer, under the imtials of O. P. Q. asserted that amongst the trading populace of Hongkong there was little faith that bankruptcies were frequent, and in short that we were a very sad set. Who the varlets were who wrote these letters we know not, but if the mendacious rogues got justice done them, they would long ere this have had proof of the virtues of a rattan when vigorously applied to the shoulders of such pu- blic calumniators as J. W. from London and O. P. Q.

We have noticed this matter at greater length than we intended; and are not sure that in doing so at all, we may not have rather of fended than pleased the firms alluded to. It is, however, so intimately connected with this lo cality, and we are so fully satisfied that the Singapore Merchant, and the Free Press have acted illiberally and indiscreetly, that we have been prompted to say more than may be ne- We do not come forward as cessary. Vindicators; the charge is so absurd that vindication is uncalled for. It is more. fit to create a laugh at Singapore credulity, than to afford a subject for serious discussion. The good folks of Singapore must have been study- ing the history of the Buccaneers lately, and to their distorted senses, each Captain of a Hongkong clipper,appears alMorgan or a Kidd; but we would calm their troubled minds with the assurance, that their vessels may visit the coast of China scaiheless, even without the pro- tection of the very amiable old gentleman who | APSI.. commands the Naval forces in China, to whom they appeal in their distress.

Q. must this summer give place to another correspondent, no less than a Singapore Merchant, who spins a long rigmarole regarding the disputes between the commander of a Singapore opium vessel and the commanders of two Hongkong vessels engaged in a similar trade on the coast of Chi- na.
