Let them first sirive for a reduction in the duty on the herb, and then build their mills. The End Regt. embarked from Madras for China in March 1842 numbering nearly 1,000 bayonets. They were present and bore an honourable part in some of the conflicts during the late war, and formed part of the force, whose close approach to the capital, led to the treaty of Peking. The Sepoys have been re- markably healthy during their service in China; but the European officers have suffered much, chiofly from the Peil or Nanking fever.
Arrangements have been made for building an Ice house and for obtaining a supply of Ice from the United States; and no doubt the com- munity will consider themselves indebted to the Gentlemen who have been at a good deal
of trouble in the matter.
As a comfort-or luxury, of life. Ice, to those resident in such fervid climates as Hong- kong, is one very much to be desired, and on that account alone it is to be hoped that a re- gular supply will be obtained during the sum- mer months. Apart from mere personal comfort, there are more important reasons for public gratulation on this subject. In fevers and other diseases prevalent during the hot months of summer and of autumn, Ice has been found a valuable medicine (if it may be so termed) and in many countries it has got into much favor with the faculty, and it is on this consi- deration that we would more highly appreciate the public, if not philanthropic spirit of those with whom the scheme originated and who have put it in a fair train for a favorable cuin pletion.
It is proposed to meet the expence by the disposal of shares; the share-holders for the first year having the privilege of a certain quantity of ice daily for nothing. The surplus stock will be sold at reasonable rates, and a quantity

We have been requested to publish the minutes of a meeting of the medical Gentle men of Hongkong, convened for the purpose of forming a Medical Society, with the resolu tions that were passed for the effecting of this laudable purpose. Associations of this des cription, whether among professional or non- professional people, are usually attended with beneficial results. They promote a friendly feeling among those engaged in the same pursuits; they also afford favorable opportuni- ties for acquiring knowledge from the experi- ence of others, and of consulting with each other on points where differences of opinion may exist.
The present society have a wide field before them. From their own observation, as well as from the observation of their professional brethren resident in the dominions of the Em peror of China, it is not improbable that some valuable discoveries will be made in the materia medica of the Chinese. It is reason. able to suppose, that during the ages that have elapsed, since this singular people were reclaim ed from barbarisma period. so remote that no authentic history can reach it-from the vegetable or mineral world of this vast terri- tory, some medicines, simple or compound, have been discovered, the virtues or the yet unknown to the value of which are nations of the west.
