In the absence of anything of the kind of our own we may consider ourselves fortunate in being visited by Officers like Captains Keppel and Percival so ready to allow the community to participate in the pleasure which good music affords.
Junks which have arrived this season up to the 24th Below we give a statement of the number of instant, greatly exceeding the arrivals last year at the same time. The arrival of emigrants has also been very large being at the 19th instant, 6,833, of whom 1,168 have come by squire rigged vessels a new feature in the history of Chinese emigration, and 5,715 by Junks. The number of emigrants last year was about 1,600, and the year before, 7,000, but judging from the number who have a ready arrived, we may anticipate that this season they will not fall mich short of 9.000 er 10,000. They are chiefly dispersed through the Straits Settlements and the neighbouring Dutch one nt. Rhin. In the Straits there will be an increased demand for labour for the Sugar Estates, which will absorb some of the surplus, and we understand that the cultivation of Gambier is being carried on in Jhore rather extensively by the Singapore Gambier Planters. We do not know what number go to Rhin, but we should think that it cannot be on the incrense, as we are informed most of the Gambier and Pepper Plantations in the vicinity of Rhio, have already been, or will soon be exhausted and abandoned. A third Cochin Chinese Ship mov be hourly looked for on which Capt. Fawcett of the diellish, and to of his crew are embarked.
We are glad to hear such good accounts of the treatment bestowed by the Cochin Chinese author- ties upon Shipwrecked persons, especially as on former occasions it was not of such a humane cha. racter. We hope the change which has come over- them will last.
