vessels are privileged to carry opium, or any other merchandise from any British port in India, or elsewhere, to any other port, so long as they do not take it to a British port. Thus American ships may carry British goods from England to Macao, Whampoa or any of the other ports of China, but legally they cannot land a bale in Hongkong, and the same with opium. No, foreign ship can engage in the coasting trade--that is, they cannot carry freight from one British port to another British port; neither can an English vessel carry freight from one port in the United States to another port in the Republic.
