His Excellency. the Governor of Hongkong has given publicity to the return furnished by the Con- sul of Shanghai of the value of goods imported and exported at that port in the second quarter of the present year. The imports amounted to 3,82,000 dollars, or £300 000 a-year; but the trade is in its very infancy; it has nothing of the bone and gristle even of youth. Thus, as the markets in the old world are, one by one, closed against us, we find new markets opened to us in new coun- fries; and we may reasonable expect that China with its three hundred millions of customers will afford us some compensation for the sixty-five mil lions of customers whom the Germanic Zollveie.n has abstracted from us.
