ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor of the Friend of China) Sin-In the mouth of last November 1 had the pleasure of hearing ft publicly announced from the pulpit of the Protestant Chapel that some twenty members of the Congregation had presented a Sera-

furtune of hearing it accompany the voices of the Children for a few Sundays afterwards. I entertained soine hope that this agreeable addition to the service would be continued, but I regret to find that since the new-year has commenced it has been altogether's lent. Will you oblige me and the community by taking such notice of the circumstance as you consider withe representative of Her Majesty will be per they had incurred here. Not that we believe with every delicacy that Hongkong and Macau

cause it to "come into play again. Ramours are circulated that it only requires a small annual sum to be raised to pay a professional mag to undertake the' regular performance and conduct the singing in a pro- per numer; and surely it is a pity (now that we have the Instrument, and the services of a professional man can be obtained) for the sake of a few dollars per annum to let our Religion be disgraced by, suc. mis- erable squalling us our ears have lately be painfully subjected to. Supposing only fifty persons could be found willing to subscribe, then only half a dollar per

mensem cach would secure to us this advantage; if a hundred subscribers could be found, one quarter dollar would be sufficient ; and I feel confident this fact requires only to be made public and the amenit will be raised; for I cannot believe it possible that where money is so freely lavished as in longkong the service of God should be found so lamentably wanting

I remain, Sir, AMICUS ECCLESHE. Nors. We insert our Correspondend's letter will.. ingly, and also egneur in his opinion that, the Psale dy at the Colonial Chapel is at least offensive to the- ears of those who do not participate in the attempt to make sweet sounds. We fear that any notice we like, of the neglect to avail of the professional servicesof a person qualified to conduct this impressive portion of our church service, will be but little attenbart to be sides these are subjects which we would rather avoid. So far as the small sum mentioned by our correspon dent is concerned-or a larger of necessary there can be no difficulty in raising it, but to do so, some body or other must take the trouble or asking for it.

We are not aware that the community at longus

are particularly lavish in their expenditure, but one thing is certain, they are liberal in their contributions in aid of every laudable object, and when solicited to do

It was at one perial, the general impres sion in Europe, that the Kings of Portugal ex- ercised soveroiga authority in Macao, by virtue of an imperial graic of the place to vassals of that country, for eminent services rendered by then to the Chinese empire. The pride, or the cunning of the rulers of Portugal, in luned them to encourage this fallacy, and to hid from the kaowledge of all, the ignoble tenure of their Chinese settlement. For a long period after the intercourse of other nations with China, had commenced, such continued to be the impres

rin being resident at Macao, exercising juris diction over the inhabitants even to the power- over life itself, registering the ships, the bats, and even granting permission to Earopeans to ercet dwelling houses, without which they dare ant do so, induced various parties to enquire into the real state of Macao with reference to the two governments of China and of Portugal. The result of the empúries, was indubitable proof that the right of sovereignty was still vested in the Emperor of China--that the Por: tuguese by the payment of an annual ground rent were permitted to build upon a certain - | portion of the peninsula--that as is the case THE FRIEND OF CHINA,he treaty of Nanking, in China, they had at our Consulates in the Levant, and also since jurisdiction over the persons of their own VICTORIA, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY, 19th 1843 people--could try and punish them by their ceased. We own laws, but there, their power need not go over all the evidence which might be adduced to prove that to the present day, Macao is virtually part and parcel of the Chis nesc empire, rented to foreigntenants, who are only allowed to control their own household. Macan was originally poopled by the lawless niners, who sought the coast of China for trade or commerce, shortly after the great Por- tuguese navigator discovered the passage to the eastward of the Cape, Many of them were solved to make a day of it, and throwing aside men of the most abandoned character; like the everything but the enjoyment of the hour, Spaniards and some of our own carly naviga. permitted the freest scope to the better feel tors, but little better than pirates: With them, ings, of our nature. On the evening of the 13th a fire broke out in the American hong No. 5, occupied by some Parsecs, which at one time threatened to destroy all the foreign residences spared by the conflagrations of December 1842, and October 1843. Fortunately the wind was light and the fire was suppressed, the only destruction being part of the house where it originated. The alarm however was very great, and steps were about being taken for the removal of books and valuables to Whampoa should it be found

necessary.
