Mention has frequently been made of the poverty of the inhabitants of Foo-chow-foo. has been asserted that there, paper was the only

Previous to the opening of the five ports, it was predicted that Shanghai and Foo-chow foo, next to Canton, would be the most import ant for commercial purposes. Some fears were entertained that the weather would prove unpropitious for the races, the previous evening having been wet, and the morning clouded and damp. Before noon how- ever it cleared up, with a fresh NE. wind sufficiently, though not too cool, but giving the rowers a hard strain at the tough ash oars to force the boats through a considerable swell, the wind being "dead on end." From 12 to past 1 o'clock the boats of the squadron wore withsas the races from the decks of the" Agin- court, and join in the evening's festivities. Shortly after 2 the first boats were started, the race, as well as all the others being keenly contested.
