Two modes suggest themselves in which it is possible for the Frenght to carry on the war. The one to land a sufficient army at one of the most southerly ports of Morocco, such as Mamora or Mogador, so march on the towns of the interior, through a countsy not deficient in supplies. The other is to advance upon Fez, and subsequently upon Mequinez, by the rout from Onchda, and through Teza. It is clear that the former inode. presents many serions obstacles-the possibility of being molested by other maritime powers, the in- security of the coast for Irge vessels the want of transports, and the unvely of the undertaking, The operations by land, on the other hand, may be carried on by an army perfectly accustomed to the peculiarities of African warfare. Nevertheless, we still believe that the difficulties which that army would have to surmount are such as no prudent Gener will encounter, cxcept at particular seasons of the year. A large body of men would not cross the Desert of Angad in less than 20 days; the conn try, or at least a very wide tract of country which must be crossed, affords un supplies for mon or beast; in the rainy season the plains are imprac. ticable; in the ensuing winter the mountain regions are blocked up by snow and storms: above all, the the very conditions which would render the march of an European army so perilous, are favourable to the evalutions of the irregular forces of Abd-el- Kader, who would be able to operate upon the rear- of the invading army. Lastly, if we even supposo the French army to arrive at Fez, as it probably MORRISON'S Dictionary, and few comentary will do at no very distant period, and as soon as the the office of this paper.

THE WAR IN MOROCCO.
(From the Times.)
The recent operations of the French fleet under the orders of the Prince de Joinville against the long neglected batteries of Tangier, irrespective of the military criticism which his mode of proceeding hus provoked, are not calculated to give rise to any serious political speculation as to their immediate result. Indeed, anr French contemporaries, while full of warth with us for publishing the disparaging opinions of naval officers upon their proficiency in the art of naval warfare, are disappointed at the bardment of our ancient possession on the African coast Ims not cafted any lively excitement in this country. But there are some points connected
The highes authorities, and thosa most enger to uniformly declared that a war with Morocco was above above all things to be avoided. The extreme and almost impenetrable difficulty of the present position of France in relation to this dispute already confirms the truth of this opinion; and when we take into consideration the general disposition of all the tribes of Northern Africa, the spirit of Abd. el-Kader, and the powerful reinforcements which are thus thrown into the hands of that intrepid chieftain, it may be anticipated that this difficulty will prove far greater than it has ever betore seemed. It is not wonderful that the first decided sted in such a path, though it was a successful one, should have produced depression other than exulta
tion in the minds of every Frenco statesman; and we can only apprehed that the war with Morocco will be the prelude to most lamentable disappoint. ments by which France will eventually expiate her inglorious career of African conquest,

Debats says day week The Journal der ← The Itmes has thought proper to give the bid of its immense circulation to some letters written, it is said, by British officers on board some ships which remained simple spectators at the bombard ment of Tangier. We think it our duty to republish them. If any one need blush for them, it is not here. We are aganted that publication of these miserable diatribes dias been generally blamed in England; we know well what kind of impression they will create in France; it will not he even anger
it will be contempt. Already has a part of the British press defended itself from all participation in such sentiment; it profesfs in the name of the officers of the Royal navy against the unworthy in fact, that they should endeavour to exenipate the officers but although we should be glad to be cours vinced that they took no part in the writing of
