We hear it rumoured that, a gentleman con nected with this colony, has purchased at Sydney N. S. Wales the steamer Corsair, for- merly in the Port Philliy aud Sydney trade, and brings her to China to ply as a passage boat between Hongkong and Canton. Much as such a thing is to be desired, we fear the rumour will prove incorrect for, if we remem- ber aright, the Corsair was hogged in the river Tamor, two years ago, and afterwards con demned. The gentleman in question may have purchased some other Steamer, however, and should such be the case the speculation will doubtless be a profitable one to himself, and highly adantageous to those who have occasio- nally to visit Canton, or ship treasure to of from that city.

BARRIERS IN THE CANTON RIVER:
Choo-ke one of the Censors for the Province of Ful-keen has made a representation to the Emperor on the subject of the Barriers put into the Canton River at the time the Englishi bar barians were making disturbances. He says that these barriers were found to be of no use in keeping the barbarians out of the river, while on the other hand by partially blocking up the water course, they cause the floods from Yun nan and Kwang se to overflow the surrounding country to the great injury of the people. There are many forts established on the river from the Bocca Tigris upwards and these, he says,

Our columns, as heretofore, are perfectly open to the discussion by correspondents, of all sut jects which are legitimate matter for the press, or to communicated papers upon topics poss- essing local interest, so long as such papers are free from the abuse of private character or in vective. Upon this head we would express ourselves clearly; it is not necessary for the admission of letters or papers, that we should concur in the views which their writers take upon particular subjects; we only ask that they be written in good faith, reserving to ourselves the privilege of criticism, or of rejection if ne- cessary.
During the past year, we have had difficul; ties to contend with, and dangers to encounter, such as we do not again anticipate; but should méot they occur we trust to be enabled them firmly. Many of the abuses we exposed have ceased to exist, and their authors no lon; ger have power in the colony; it is however a truth, which must never be lost sight of, that in nearly all colonies, there is a desire evinced by the Executive to assume powers to which they have no clain, and at whatever risk it has to be done, the local papers are then called upon to express the voice of the unrepresented com- munity, It is equally true that, a colonial atmosphere, too often, is unfavorable to that liberty of the press, which has been declared to be the palladium of the rights of the subject; and that the healthy shoot from the parent stem though of true English growth, either languishes into prematire death, or exists an exotic, stunted and sickly.
