NEW SOUTH WALES.

COMMERCIAL REMARKS, 1ST APRIL,

(From the Sydney Herald.) The markets during the week have not been active, but a good amount of business has been transacted, generally at satisfactory prices; many more sales might have been effected but for the firmness which holders manifest for increased

rated

Tibne remains unchanged in regard to price, supply, and quality-Timber for buildings is of fered at from 5s, to ds. per 100 feet; cedar from 48 to 10s per 100 feet in log, and from lyd. to 2ąd, per foot, in plank. Shinglow are from 7a, to Ds per 100, paling. 4a Od to 58, 6d. per 1000; posts and raila, 295, to 289, për 100; tresnails, from 428 to 50s, per 1000.

WHEAT -This market has remained in a very indetive state throughout the work, arising from the known large shipments to arrive from Van Diemen's Landio transactions are reported, but-pricos must rate low,

Froun remains without alteration, Provisions --Almost all articles under this damonination, remain extremely dull of sale, and prices are looking down, exopting prime Irish pork, of which there is very lite in the market, Hyeonakin Tea-The purchases have been upon a small scale, but prices are firin about 50 phesis, ox Kelso, wild for £5 15s,, some sales have been made, ex Dawsons, for £1158, the holders ex haided will not realize under £5, Congous-20 chests, sold for £5 58. There is very little demand for fine leas, and juuk teas are quite neglected by the trade.

It will be seen that the import duties are low, not above five per cent ad valorem, and we have no doubt that a profitable trade will gradually spring up between Sydney And China. Sydney will be the depot whance the various settlements. in Australasia and Polynesin will obtain their stipplies of tea and ather Chinese produce, while we shall be able to send to China, parcularly the orthern ports, large quantition of course woollen cloths, for which there will be a great demand and which can be manufactured is thus aylanty comparatively cheap, and by sending to Europe only the fine wools, will give a still higher coa meter to the Australian fleece. We would call particular attention also to the promitin given in the tariff to birdsnests, sharks-Hina, slugs, ko.. showing the great donland there is for animal matter. Surely a coarse golantino, of which so many scores of tons have been wasted in this co- jony lately, would find a ready marke there, al any rate it is worth a trial. We have heard lately | of large sums sent but from England, and dow lying idle in the bank

banks, because in the present state of affairs, partios are afraid to invest. – We would suggest to such persons that the establish ment of a factory to make coarse cloth would be almost sure of answering well, and the great ad vantago they would have, would be in the saving of freight and other expenses on the raw xuntorial, PEARL BARLEY-16 casts brought 288. per in itself a handsome profit, for there is the saun

SUGAR is held more firmly, but the sales have been limited 20 lous Mauritius sold for £20 per ton: 15 tons Tari. rather moist, brought £19; and 25 tous ordinary Manila £18; English refin- vd, 16 tierces, 4d, per lb.

CIGARS are without alteration. The stock of prine No. 4 is rapidly declining, and very shortly there will be nono be had.

B. P. M.--This market continues heavy, but with little or no change in price: the trans actions have been confined to small parcels only, BRANDY-The demand connues limited, and is confined to Martell's and Hennessy's brands, Former prices are fully maintained. The advices po Arachae mention that the vintage in France has fallen off twenty per cent. on former years, and a large advance in this articlo will in one quence take place. *****

Cau Gis-An advanco has taken place in this article, 100 whole cases having been taken at 14s. and 70 half cases at 78.

BOTTLED ALE AND PORTER. This market yet very dull state, there being scarcely any inquiry; prices are little better than nominal, Sort Goops --A good business has been done throughout the week at 25 per cent. adyance

KNATCHBULL-On Wednesday last, Mr Surgeon Bennett and Dr. W. B. Noville, at the request of persons interested in the case, Uxamined Knatch bull's mental capabilities, and saw no reason to doubt his sanity. It has been finally defermined thai he shall be executed outside the gaol.

COLONIAL MANUFACTURES. - Musars, Fisher and Donaldson, of the Stockton Factory, Newcastle, live favoured us with a sample of cloth mean factured by them, which is of a very superior dés. cription, and as it becomes known will doubtless meet with a ready sale in Sydney, both for home cousumption and exportation. The Stockton Fag tory is, we understand, capable of producing ak most any extent of cloth that may be required; and although at present Messrs. E. and D. only employ about fifty hands (the

(the majority being women and children), they expect to have additional m chinory in a very short time, which will enable them to employ four times the number of persons they do now, and in course of time to manufuelure. for the Chinese market. At present, however, the colonial market consumes all they can make, and the demand is increasing,

and likely to increases

We look forward to the time, and we do not think it is very distant, when we shall export to China as niuch cloth of colonial manufacturo as will pay best way to hasten that time is by encouraging, by for the ten we require from that country, and the

all the means in our power, the use of colonial cloth, and thus, by adding to the profite, increase the efficiency of the colonial manufacturers.

KNATONBULL We have received two portraits of this wretched individualove published by Baker the other by Barlow, Not having seen Knatchbull we are unable to say which is the best likeness. but Barlow's is the best executed print To pre- serve the portraits of the virtuous is an excellent way of keeping them in remembrance, but we do not approve of any thing likely to perpetuate the memory of such a man as Knatchbull, the sooner he is forgotten the better.

VAN DIEMEN'S LAND. (from the Sydney Herald.) We have again looked through our Hobart Tomu and Launceston papers, but we have not been able to do

able to disaoror any intelligence in addition to that already given.

The Launceston papers give a very flattering account of their position as compared with other colonies. They state that thole exports for the Byea

will be in wool, 193,000, in oil 675,000 in whalebone, £18,000 and in grain at a per bushel, and sundries €116,000; And they rely on a Conimissariat expenditure of 950,000, in nd dition to their exports. At the op tone the get- ilets are bautioned against holding back their grain, as they did in formue tunes, and refered for it, in the hope of gotting Mrker pricus than Sinoor buyers are now giting. It is max that the Com misariat will require about 150.000 bushels of wheat in the courra éle

We receive, per Augustus, yesterday morning Adelaide papore, from 22nd to 97th March in elusively. There is nothing in them, however, of importance to our readers. The South Australians are still sanguine, ned apparently with good run- son, as to their future prosperity. The papersTEA. untere we are filled with extraots from English, Sydney, and Hobart Town papers, which haid boo recently received at Adelaide, and which we pub ished with a view to encourage the colonists, by showing the remunerating prices which their pro duce found in colonial and Home Markets. One principal topic of discussion is the mining in- terests of the colony, and there can be litte doubt that the production of motats will be an im. portant feature of South Australia, -Nydney Herald, 6th April..
