Indeed, it is we believe admitted that there is not much imprudence in the management of the bank, the error lying in the opposite extreme of overcautiousness, which, how ever is the salest side of the two. 11 was pro- posed at the meeting that the Credits should be extended from /10,000 to 100,000, and given on the security either of fixed property of double the valuo, or two good sureties. For this the appro- bation of the Government is to be naked as it alters an articlo in the Bauk Charter Icaro 19 observed this extension of tredita to $100,000 niny prove beneficial, but the Directors ought olearly to defne to themselves the objects for which it should be granted, and see that it is not applied to other purposes. If this point is neglect ed, and the Bank merely looks to puting out money on mortgage, it will not do much good, and may be productive of barin.

The appointment of Mr. Davis to the high and important post of Chief Superintendent to Ber ilajesty's trade in China, in succession to its xe colloney Sir H&NKY Porrinaga, will no doubt afford the highest satisfaction not only to British Subjects generally but also a great portion of the Chinese Community, many of whom regard him with feelings of the most lively respect and ad uimation Mr. Davis his talents of the highest order, and is just the individual who is peculiarly qualified for the high and responsible situation to which he lands appointed. There is not the slightest doubt therefore that his administration of affilms in Ohion, will be fraught with equal ad- Vantage to the Governmon and the public at large; and we should indeed be happy to learn that all his arrangements and appointments will tend to strengthen the public confidence, and lead to ge nemi and universal satisfaction among its people, From our own koowledge of the Sattlement pr Hongkong, which embraces a period of nearly three years we have no hesitation in saying that by wresting The power from the Chinese, England has greatly improved the condition of our fellow creatures in this part of the Globe, mud what is, or the highest importance, she has taught them to place the most implicit confidence in the admi- mistration of her government, and convinced them of the just and impartial manner in which all its affairs are conducted.
