The French frigates Erigone, Capt. Cecile, and Cleopatra Capt. Roy, on their passage across from Manila [which they left on the 3rd October] en- countered very severe weather.
On the morning of the 9th it came on to blow strong from the N. E., at 2 P. M., the wind vee to North, increasing rapidly; at 4 O'clock
a hurricane, carrying away tile fore-staysail of t Erigone. She was nearly thrown on her beam ends, her lee bulwarks were under water for 30 minutes before by the exertions of her offic and crew, she righted. Her rudder was found to be badly damaged. On the 12th in sight of the Taya to avoid being driven amongst the dangerous islands [off Hainan] we were obliged to anchor reefs and shoals in Junk Passage. After being employed for 4 days refitting arrived in Macao Roads on the 21st.
It is said that Captain Cecile will leave the Erigone and proceed to Manila in the Cleopatra to take command of the French squadron, to be statio- ned in the Chinese and Indian seas: it will be com- posed of the La Sirene 60 gun, Cleopatra 50, friga- tes; three Sloops of war, the L Alcmene, La Sabine
and La Victorieuse.
Captain Roy will take command of the Erigone and Sail for France as soon as she can be got hit for sea.
