Qun Opium Market evinces an upward tenden cy which yours think will sympathise with. The Stock in Bengal is very little. Paina 2800 Chests. Benares 950. Here we have about 1200 altogether. At Calcutta prices had advanced for Patna to Rs. 1950. Benares 1550. The Sylph was waiting at Calcutta for news from your Port, the Wider Witch was going in on the 8th, when the Persian was leaying
General business is here in a most deplorable state owing to the many failures among the Chinese.
CANTON 19th September, 1849.
Here we are in a precious mess, for the local Authorities and employees from the great Hoppo to the rascal Cooley striving their hardest to thwart the new arrangements. Then the apathy and ignorance displayed by our Consular establish- ment, is so truly appalling, that none of us have any -heart to make a stand against the new exaction
Would you believe it a Lorcha under the Briush flag comes up, lies off the Factories, and quietly settles with the Old Hoppe for what FEE it may land its cargo of Puntalat Jackass Point. Some misunderstanding afterwards arising among the owners of these pried goods, an application is made and granted by the Consul to put them under an arched passage,
With the disgusting and almost universal vera lity of the Chinese officials, what other inference will they draw from this, than that it is a little piece of English bribery pigeon. I might give you many other instances of the miserable issue of the Ned System and although you so much lauded the New Tariff, I would ask you what I have to be thankful for seeing that the Duty and Cost of Shipping off Teis is now heavier than before, and fully two taels more than during the Company's
time.

Speed of the North River Steamboats.-The Empire and the South America, in their ascending trip on Tuesday, ran one hundred miles in four hours and 30 minutes. The question is undecided which boat as the greatest speed; but the friends of the Empire insist that when she is fitted with the additional blowers, originaly intended to be used, she will defy competition. runaway, the rapid passage also that I have made to Singapore and back, is, I believe, unexampled in the history of navigation.
