THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE

MILITARY GLOSSARY:

By Henry Hardbargain, extracted from the United Service Gazelle, of the 8th ult.)

GENERAL A military biped, much addicted to long, stories and short whist.

COLONEL –An individual with brass spure, and an exaggerated estimate of his own importanco,

ADJUTANT-An officer whose duties consist in flat. tering the colonel, flirting with his wife, nursing his children, and swearing at the men,

AIDE DE CAMP-Ditto, on a more extended scale, ENSION. →An emancipated schoolboy... MESS-A regimental victualling establishment ins. tituted for the purpose of placing inebriety within the reach of officers of moderate incomes,

MUFTI-A description of costume worn by officers, when they wish to be mistaken for gentlemen.

UNIFORM - A dress only varying from a footman's livery, inasmuch as you do not receive quite such high wages for wearing it.

It will thus be seen that this very lively author has been pretty impartial, in dealing with all ranks, and orders of the British Army, His glossary, however, has over-looked a word which it ought to have ex- plaind. We will supply the omission,

HARDBARGAIN—A snob, who having found his way into the Army by purchase, is sent to Coventry for his coarseness and vulgarity, and that mild remedy proving inefficacious, gets his nose tweaked and his nether end kicked, and then retires from the profession and writes a book in its abuse, to which be dares not attach his real name lest the discipline to which he has been already subjected, should be repeated.
