# CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZNTTH,

JHONGKONG, THURSDAY, MARCH 9rm. 1843,

We regret to announce the demise of the Imperial Commissioner, ELEPOO, which event took place at Canton on the 4th inst. Although at an advanced age and in a very feeble state of health, yet his sudden death took every one by surprise. We hear that he died at the house of one of the Hong merchants (Poon-king-qua) shortly after partaking of a banquet-which had been specially provided.

We attach not the slightest credence to the sinister reports now in circulation, and which are industriously propagated by the gobe-mouches of Canton.

The death of the Imperial Commissioner at this juncture, is much to be deplored as all discussions with respect to the new Commercial arrangements, must of course be suspended, for H. M. Plenipotentiary could not consent to treat with any person. not holding the Emperor's Scal as High Commissioner and un-invested with the same large powers as the deceased Functionary.

It is expected, that Keying, a near rela- tive of the Emperor, will be re-appointed Imperial Commissioner. As his proceeding to this part of China may be inconvenient, (and as all the requisite inquiries at Canton have been completed) H. E. Sir Henry Pot- tinger has already addressed Keying, and we believe he has intimated, that should Keying be nominated, H. E. would, as soon as possible after the arrival of Major Mal- colm, be prepared to proceed Northward, and give the new Imperial Commissioner a meeting, either at Ningpo or Shanghai.

Our readers cannot but gratified at this additional instance of the eagerness and promptitude, which have been uniformly manifested by H. E. to bring all matters to a final and satisfactory settlement.

We hear H. E. the Pleipotentiary will proceed to Macao this day, and as the

presence in Canton of Mr. Morris Thom and Lieut. Balfour, can „no be of use,we presume they will ere t arrived at Macao.

THE following-statement of the carried on at Singapore during the 1839-40 and 1840-41 by the Chines may prove interesting to our He readers, shewing as it does the extent importance of a branch of trade that may, with proper management, be drawn

supply the northern ports of Chim, as well as Hong- kong and Canton, with Straits produce at a cheaper rate than they now get it and with afair profit on the transaction at the same time.

this gives a consumption for the three years of lb 1 per inhabitant per year. Taking the quintal or centner at lb 113.381 it would appear the Con- sumption of Sugar is Ib 4.408 per head annually. We think we are correct in our view as we find Dr. Bowring estimates it at 3.9-10 Ib in the Ger- man League.

b

As we are on the subject, we may mention that the Consumption in Great Britain is estimated at 29 annually for each individual. In the COM- PANION TO THE BRITISH ALMANAC it is stated, that families s receiving £150 to £200 per year con- sume from tb 150 to Ib 200. At the low rate for Sugar which ruled a few years since the weekly consumption of Sugar in the family of an Agricul- tural labourer was stated before a Committee on the Poor Law Amendment Act at half a pound, while others in less favorable circumstances pur- chase so small a quantity as one penny worth weekly. One of our Statisticians says the con- sumption ought to be 16 oz weekly for each indi vidual. In New South Wales the Government allowance to Assigned Convicts is lb 2 of Sugar weekly. The average annual European Consump- tion is believed to be about lb 21 per head.

If English labourers could consume as much Su- gar as the same class in America (and they would do so but for the unwholesome governmental restrainsts on their industry) more that treble our present Import would be required. Thus much for vicious Commercial legislation..

In the States of the German League, the Con- sumption of Corres during the three years above mentioned, averaged lb 57,786,098 or lb 2.218 per head per annum. The consumption of Tea we make out to be lb 3,256,121 or 2 oz per head per

annum, 4

En passant, we remark that first class teas shipped from hence and which cost t delivered in Bond, in London, 3s. to 4s. per lb, such as Flowery Pekoes &c are, we are told, shipped mainly to the German market and sold at the Leipsic fair, and it is stated on good authority, that these Teas are often packed into the old boxes, which have con- tained Teas brought from Kiachta, and hence many of the renowned Russian Caravan Teas are Canton and for which the qur Home Consumers really fine Sorts, sent by British merchants from will not pay an adequate price.

SALT B

BEEF In the SYDNEY HERALD, lately received, the probable Exportation of SALT BEEF, forms a prominent topic of discussion. Some con- signments, which have been sent to England, have turned out so well, that orders have been given to remit funds home, in that shape. It appears, should the Australian grazier realize 24d. per tb Beef, delivered in London, duty Paid, will be £ 4. for his Oxen, that the cost price of a tierce of Salt 7.10, or about 34d. per Ib.

no less than a hundred thousand boxes certaining twenty thousand (20,000) pienls, and letters lately received from Singapore say it will be still larger this Season

In the exports from Singapore by Chinese junks there has also been a considerable increase, those of Cotton and Cotton goods amounting last Season, to 20,000 bales and 40,000 pieces respectively, whilst in one or two of the minor articles such as Pepper and Betelnut the quantity has not been quite so great.
