Would you take the trouble to inquire, Mr. Editor, you would find there is hardly a Pirate who is not, one way or other, connected with, the Opium trade. It is known there arency lying at Whampon, sundry craft, which a long time past have been o

It is much to be wished that as early as possible the Bogue forts should be rebuilt, and that our Authorities should come to an understanding with the Chinese, to co-operate in the suppression of the present wretched state of things.
I am glad to see that the people of England, are beginning to see the odiousness of the present illicit trade, in Opium, It is undeniable, that its existence under present regulations or rather non-regulations is in the greatest degree detrimental to the best interests of the China trade.

Wir much gratification, we copy from the Singapore Free Press an extract of the last report of the Committee, appointed by the Indian Gov- ernment, for the investigation of the Coal and mineral resources of India.d
One of the most interesting portions of the report is an account of the discovery of Coal at Bornen, we
quote at length the committee's remarks on this sub-
ject..
*Two samples of Coal from the Island of Borneo, together with a letter from Government in the Politi. cal department, enclosing extracts of "correspondence from the Governor of the Eastern Settlements on the subject, and requesting a report from the committee as to the quality of each sample. These Coals are stated- by Mr. Bonham to exist on two small Island in the Borneo river called Pulo Chirming and Pulo Keng Arrang. The first of these consists of about half maund of pure good Coal,

This Coal is admirably adapted for Steam purposes. It appears from the letter, of Mr. Bonham that Pulo Chirming is an Island within 6 miles of the town of Borneo, of 3 miles in circumference, situated in a large navigable river, easy of access and free from danger. The Coal is found on the Beach, the ebbing and flow- ing of the tide having remoted the superincumbent bed of clay, leaving the Coal exposed at low water. It is also supposed to extend into the Island where it mpy be obtained by merely removing the superin cumbent earth."
The Coal has been tried in large quantity on board the Diana Steamer, and Mr. Bonham remarks that the Engineer of that vessel; reported very favourably of its quality.
