Jɛ-нo. At Jé-kō, the summer residence of the Emperor, a number of robbers were sometime ago arrested and thrown into prison. The wretched state of the prisons, and negleet by their Keepers caused the prisoner's death. The Emperor orders the of ficers in charge of the Jo-ho district to be handed over to the Board of Punishments for allowing the culprits to remain so long in prison without bringing them to trial.

He bases his request upon an apprehended attack from the English, in revenge for a barbarian ship that was attacked and sunk by the force under his command. His Majesty comply-mated the total value of our Silk manufacture in ing with his request, sends officers and

SINCE 1830, the armies of Europe have cost £2,000,000,000. The Coffee tree has been found to succeed in Andalusia.-Dr. Payerne has proved he can remain a long time (and has in a diving bell remained three hours) under water without a communication with the atmospheric air. Russia is preparing another expedition against the Circassians, and in conjunction with Turkey is taking measures to prevent gunpowder being sup- plied to them by foreign merchants. We hope Russia will fail in all her attempts to subjugate a country, to which she has no legitimate claim of occupancy.
This city, Ningpo, on the occasion of the attack of Chapoo was evacuated by the British forces. It is also stated that the city of Tinghai has been deserted by the British, leaving only a small detachment, three hundred strong on a hill without the city, and that the Chiness have again taken possession of the place. This
step is so opposed to the spirit of SIE HENRY POTTINGER'S lative to the retention of Chuman, that iderable surprise to the British resi- pity that the strength and should be frittered away in
