Excellency Sir Henry Pottinger, Ba having been pleased to increase, în some respects, the powers and authority originally granted to the Chief and Marine Magistrates, respectively, the Warrants of those Officers have been revised and modi- fied, and in their new form are now publish ed for general information.

WARRANT.
By his Excellency Sir Henry Pottinger, Bart, her Majesty's Minister Plenipoten- tiary Envoy Extraordinary, and Chief Superintendant of the Trade of British Subjects in China, charged with the Government of the Island of Hongkong.
Pending her Majesty's further pleasure, I do hereby constitute and appoint you, William Caine Esquire, brevet Major, and Captain in Her Majesty's 26th. (or Camero nian) Regiment of Infantry, to be Chief Magistrate of the Island of Hongkong and its dependencies: and I do hereby empow- er and require you to exercise authority, according to the laws, customs, and usa- ges of China as near as may be (every de- ofte re excepted) for the preser- and the protection of life fall the native inhabitants Island, the shores and harbours
