Calcutta for Suez, on the 8th of the month. This arrangement took effect on the 16th Instant, the Steamer which, in the ordinary course, should leave Bombay for Point de Galle, and China, on that day, having been withdrawn.
No alteration has been made in the Packet Services by which the London Mails of the 4th and 9th of the month for the Straits and China are conveyed; but the Mails for those places of the 20th and 25th of October and of every succeeding month, will for the present, be forwarded from Point de Galle via Calcutta. The Steam Vessel on the Calcutta and China line, will call at Penang and Singapore, both on the outward and the homeward Voyages. With respect to the return Mails from Hong- kong, those to be conveyed direct to Point de Galle will leave Hongkong on the 11th of the Month, as at present, but the period for despatching the Mail to be forwarded to Calcutta will be regulated so as to allow ample time for the Packet's arrival at Calcutta before the 8th of the Month.
The Company state that, although the departure of this Steamer may occasionally vary a day or two. it will. under ordinary circumstances, start from Hongkong, about the 16th or 17th of the month, and the return Packet to arrive about the 23rd of the mouth.
This branch Packet is put on as the best substitute which the Company can provide for the Steamer which has been withdrawn, but it is feared that perfect reliance cannot be placed on the junction with the homeward Packet at Calcutta.
