REMARKS. The preceding Returns have been compiled from the entries in the Books kept at this office. The Quantities specified are those that have paid or been declared for assessment of duty.-The weights and measures stated are those in use at Shanghae. 1 catty is equal to 1 pound avoirdupois, and 100 catties correspond with 1331 pounds in England. 1 chang is 4 English yards nearly.-The value given has in most instances been computed upon the average prices of the year in the Shang- hae market, and where this has been found impracticable, an approximate estimate has been subs- tituted. The reduction of the Spanish Dollars into Sterling has been made at the average Exchange of the year of 6s. 6d. per dollar. When trade under foreign flags has been included, the information has been derived from official records when these where accessible. The destruction of the Custom- house books on the capture of the City has made it impossible to give returns of duties levied on for- eign trade in the year ending December 1853.

RUTHERFORD ALCOCK,—-Consul.

sh Consulate, Shanghae, 31st December, 1853.
