GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.
HE Contract hitherto in force for the publication of GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATIONS having ceased on the 21st instant. -Notice is hereby given, that the HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, this day established, will be hereafter the only Official Organ of Proclamations, Notifications, and all Public Papers of this Government.

BY His Excellency Sir JOHN BOWRING, Knight, Governor and Commander-in- Chief of the Colony of Hongkong and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, Her Majesty's Plenipotentiary and Chief Superintendent of the Trade of British Subjects in China, with the Advice of the Legislative Council of Hongkong.
MARKET ORDINANCE.
[29th August, 1854.]
WHEREAS it is expedient to repeal and amend Ordinances No. 1 and No. 4 of
1847:-

1. Be it therefore enacted and ordained by His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Legislative Council thereof, that from and after the passing of this 1 and 4 of 1847
repealed. Ordinance the said Ŏrdinances No. 1 and No. 4 of 1847 be and are hereby repealed, and that from and after the passing of this present Ordinance whoever shall establish any Market in this Colony for the sale of articles of trade which are usually exposed for sale in Markets without having obtained the license of His Excellency the Governor shall be liable to the penalty hereinafter provided and such Market shall be removed as a public nuisance.

II. That all Markets already established shall be licensed and their owners are hereby required to take out such license within fifteen days after the passing of this licensed. Ordinance under the penalty hereinafter mentioned for each and every day that such Markets shall continue open and unlicensed, and that each of such Markets shall be let to the highest bidder for the tenancy thereof, and that such letting shall be by sold by tender or tender or by public auction before the Chief Magistrate of Police, as shall be deemed Public Auction. best by the Colonial Secretary and that each of such Markets shall be let for a term of years not exceeding three years. Provided always that the party or parties rent- ing each of such Markets shall hold the same subject to such regulations for the gulations for hold- conduct maintenance and repairs thereof as shall from time to time be officially published by the Officer administering the Government of this Colony.

IV. And be it further enacted and ordained, That every Market or Building for the holding of Markets, hereafter to be built, erected, or established, shall be erected, built of Stone, &c., built, and established of Stone or Brick, according to a Plan to be approved of by the Surveyor-General.
