II. M.'s SLOOP Bittern, CHINHAE, 25th September, 1855. SIR,-On returning into port this afternoon, I hasten to thank you for the additional information respecting Piratical Fleets in this 16th instant, and announcing the jeopardy in which some ladies were neighbourhood, conveyed to me by Mr Interpreter Meadows on placed by the doings of those villains. I decided to proceed to the rescue without delay, fortunately having had the services of the merchant steamer Paoushun placed at our disposal; and I have the satisfaction of informing you, that we re-captured in Shih-poo the Ningpo boat taken from Mr Russell near Sin-kea-mun. The enclosed note and an umbrella seemed to be all the recoverable property.

2. You will regret to learn that a complete success against the Shih-poo nest of Pirates has not been obtained without serious loss. We all deplore the death of a valuable officer, the Master, Mr Turner, as also of a marine and fifteen others wounded, three of whom have lost a leg. Happily falling in with the P. & O. steamer Lady Mary Wood, on her way to Shanghae, the kindness of Captain Jamieson enabled us to forward the cases of amputations thither for quiet and comfortable treatment, not obtainable in a brig actively employed.
