The following Letter, from the Master of the Ship Lord Warriston, is published for general information. The Position as marked down must, however, be considered as yet doubtful. The numerous Islands in the cality in question are not published in the Charts with the desired accuracy, and there might possibly be an Error in the Ship's Longitude.
By Order,
Colonial Secretary's Office, Victoria, Hongkong, 26th June, 1857.

SHIP Lord Warriston, Hongkong, 22d June, 1857. TO THE HARBOUR MASTER AND AUTHORITIES OF THE PORT. GENTLEMEN,—Having sailed from the Port of Sydney, (Australia,) on 18th April, 1857, for this Port, on the 27th May, at 6 A.M., vered a small Flat Island, extending from N.W. to S.E., of about 3 or 4 miles dimensions, distant about 15 miles, bearing 8. § E. At .., the said Island, just dipping, bore S. by E. about 20 to 25 miles, and by good observations by Chronometer and Meridian" Altitude places the Baid Island in about 0° 55′ 8. and Long, 169° 25′ E.
Having no Island mentioned in any such near position on any Chart possessed by myself, I avail myself of giving you the earliest formation.—With kind respect, I beg to remain, Gentlemen, yours very respectfully,
W. LOCK,
Master.
