"At daylight on the morning of the 21st, some Piratical Junks were observed attacking a Junk in the offing. As soon as the steam was up, we weighed and gave chase.

The Fleet consisted of eight Juuks, two or three of which were Lorchas. A strong N.E. breeze was blowing, which very much favoured their escape, as they separated immediately upon making us out; and we only succeeded in capturing one Lorcha with a Portu- gurse flag flying, and compelling another and a West Coast boat to anchor close to the shore, under Pyramid Point, from which place we towed them out and burnt them.

"Five Portuguese and nineteen Chinese were taken out of the first vessel, the remainder of the crew were either killed or drowned, as several were seen to jump overboard. Her armament consisted of four long 9-pounders, The crews of the two other vessels escaped on shore. One West Coast Boat was seen running along shore to the Westward, and I telegraphed Camilla, which had made her appear- ance in the offing, to chase in that direction, while I steamed round Pyramid Point. Not being however able to see any of the Junks, I returned to Tongboo, and sent a letter to the Chief Magistrate of that place, requesting him to seize and send on board any of the crew who might have landed, particularly Foreigners. In the afternoon he came on board, stating that he had captured thirteen Chinese, seven of which he sent ou board. The Foreigners had got away.

At daylight weighed and steered towards Rogue's Point.

*Observing a West Coast Junk under Meichen Island, and several smaller ones endeavouring to escape, stood in as far as the depth of er would allow, and anchored,-sent Lieutenant Wale with the Pinnace and Cutters to search them.

water

At 11 AM. the Boats returned, having set fire to six Piratical Vessels, one of which was a West Coast Junk. As soon as the boats Soon after noon several suspicious Junks were observed lying were up, weighed and steamed over to the west side of Meichen Sound. under the neck of land forming the east side of the S.W. part of Meichen Sound. The ship was taken in and anchored as close as the depth of water would allow, (about 2,000 yards,) and the Boats sont in manned and armed.

*The Junks opened fire as soon as the Boats rounded the Point. They were however soon silenced by the fire from the Boats and Ship. Seventeen Piratical Junks were captured; unfortunately the tide was so low and ebbing, that many were high and dry, and shortly the whole of them. Two Lorchas and one Junk were brought out and brought in here. The rest were completely destroyed by fire, and a great deal of Powder, Plunder, &c.

*

Left Meichen Sound on the morning of the 23d, with three prizes in tow. Anchored off this Port the same evening, and the outer anchorage this morning.

*I do not expect to be able to leave this place before the morning of the 20th, and as I have only 50 tons of Coal, shall be obliged to make my passage principally under sail.

"I beg to enclose Lieutenant Wale's statement of the capture and destruction of the fleet of Firatical Boats in Meichen Sound; and in justice to that officer, now of some years' standing, beg to bring the zeal to your notice which he has invariably displayed, when the like duties have called for his services.”

GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

Diplomatic Department.

His Excellency Her Majesty's Naval Commander-in-Chief having directed a Survey to be made for the discovery of the Sunken Rock on which H.M.S. Raleigh struck, on the 14th instant, has communicated to His Excellency the Chief Superintendent of Trade the following Report from Captain Bate, which is published for general information.

By Order,

Superintendency of Trade, Victoria, Hongkong, 29th April, 1857.

W. WOODGATE.

H. M.'s S. Coromandel, AT HONGKONG, 26th April, 1857.

SIR-In pursuance of your order of the 24th instant, I have the honour to acquaint you that I have, in company with the Master of II. M.'s S. Raleigh, examined the Rock on which that ship unfortunately struck, and establish its position to be, by Admiralty Chart, in Latitude 22° 2′ N., Longitude 113° 47′ E. When on it, the following true Bearings obtain, viz :

Gap in the centre of " South White Rock," in line with the right extreme of a small wedge-shaped Island, off the Eastern Hill of

Lapsuim Island,—Ñ. 33° E. Highest part of Aichan Island,-N. 86° E.

East Chuck-mun" Peak, nearly in line with a small cliff head, the Eastern extremity of a bluff Island immediately N. W. of

Chuck-mun, S. 47}° E.

Great Ladrone Peak, seen over the Eastern slope of Pakhak Island, S. 281 W.; and the South extreme of the Northern Liangnib

Island in one with a small knob on the north summit of Woong Island-W. 4° N.

It is a small pinnacle Rock on which a moderate sea breaks at low water spring tides, and has 9 and 10 fathoms immediately off it, with 7 and 8 fathoms rocky bottom, in the vicinity to the south eastward.

The

dauger is situate nearly in Mid Channel, between “ Pakhak Island” and “ South White Rock,” being distant from the latter 2.6 miles, and was, as far as I can ascertain, unknown.

I should recommend vessels not to use this channel until the ground has been more closely examined.—I have, &c.,

His Excellency StR MICHAEL SEYMOUR, K.C.B.,

&c., &c. &c.

WM. THORNTON BATE,
