GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

VOL. II No. 90.

The Contract for publishing this Gazette, entered into on the 24th September, 1853, was terminated on the 30th ultimo; and notice is hereby given, that a Nkw SERIES of this Gasette will be published hereafter, to commence from the 7th instant, under a New Contract, and that

“THE HONGkong goveRNMENT GAZETTE”

will, as before, be the only Official Organ for PROCLAMATIONS, NOTIFICATIONS, and PUBLIC PAPERS, of this Government.

GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

drainage problem

A representation having been made by the Acting Surveyor General, that many of the houses in the City of Victoria are unprovided with Downspouts, for the the purpose of carrying off the refuse water from the several floors, and more particularly in the case of tenements inhabited by Portuguese and Chinese :-Notice is hereby given, that unless proper provision is made by the Owners or Occupiers of Houses within One Month from she date hereof, for the drainage of each floor, by the erection of proper and sufficient Downspouts, to the satisfaction of the Acting Surveyor General, that Officer has by the direction of His Excellency The Governor been instructed to carry out the provisions of Ordinances Nos. 8 and 12 of 1856.

His Excellency The Naval Commander-in-Chief has caused the following Notification to be issued to the Officers of Her Majesty's Ships for regulating the Rates of Pilotage to be paid by them during the existing occupation of the Canton River.

General Order,

Niger, at CANTON RIVER, 10th February, 1857.

My attention having been called to the large amounts paid for Pilotage of Her Majesty's Ships in the Canton River, which, though in accordance with the established Regulations as regards Pilotage from place to place, yet in consideration of permanent employmentl mounts to far more than could be made under any ordinary dircumstances; I have to direct that, from and after the 1st February, al, Ships requiring Pilots in the Canton River, shall bear them as such at the following permanent rates of pay whilst so employed, unless by By written Order to the contrary.

Vessels drawing more than 10 feet water,—24 Dollars per day.

Vessels drawing under 10 feet water,--2 Dollars per day.

giving these directions, I have to call the most particular attention of the Masters of Her Majesty's Ships to the importance of their making themselves so far acquainted with the Navigation of the River, as to avoid the necessity of engaging the services of Chinese Pilots, which, at the best, should only be considered a matter of absolute necessity; and to encourage them in acquiring such knowledge, I
