LETTER OF PROCEEDINGS. · ·

Nimrod, HONGKONG, 9th April, 1859.

S-In obedience to your orders, I proceeded in company with H.M. Gun-boats Forester and Junus to Cupchi, accompanied by Mr Dell, Registrar General, off which place we arrived at 10.30 A.M., on the 4th inst., having been detained 24 hours in Chimo Bay from f weather. On arrival we were welcomed by the Elder of the Town, who related to us the atrocities which had been committed district by the miscreant Pirates, he having lost a brother and nephew, besides property to the amount of Five Thousand Dollars, a of which had been disposed of at Hutung. He also informed us that the Pirate force consisted of Seven Junks, commanded by the Chef Momnema, who, Mr Caldwell states, has been at the head of Piracies in these Waters for the last five years. Receiving on board r of Cupchi, who was most anxious to accompany us, we proceeded to Chelang, but found they had gone to Sea or had gone South. re proceeded to Bios Bay, but found they had not been there for some time.

From the information that we had gathered from the Fishermen, there remained no doubt that having landed a part of the Cargoes of

ptured Junks at Hutung, they would endeavour to land the remainder there as soon as they had ascertained we had gone away.

is the following morning I returned to lutung, and landed with the armed Boats, and through Mr Caldwell demanded that they should up the Cargoes. They admitted that a portion of the Cargo, to the amount of Two Thousand Dollars, had been landed there, but was there at that time, excepting 200 bags of Sugar, which had been ransomed by the Owner. I therefore, with the concurrence of Mr Caldwell, em that they must pay an idemnity of One Thousand Dollara, giving two hours for consideration, at the end of which time, if my I was not acceded to, I should set fire to the Town. Having waited two hours and upwards without their shewing any signs of coming I fired a few Rockets at intervals over the Town, when they ultimately consented to pay the money by a given time, upon which ted to the ship, informing them that unless the agreement was fulfilled. I should adopt more severe measures in the morning. At 10 P.M., a Boat came on board with a Note for the amount, duly attested by the Elders of Cupchi, who were perfectly satisfied, and expressed thanks for the service we had rendered them.

Is conclusion, I must beg to bring to your notice the zealous manner the duties were performed by the Officers commanding the Gun-

I have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant,

Captain J. J. McCleverty, C.B.,
