They further engage not to enforce one against the ether any prohibition of importation or exportation, which shall not at the same time be applicable to all other nations.

ARTICLE XX.

The present Treaty shall not be valid unless Her Britannic Majesty shall be authorized by the assent of Her Parliament to execute the engagements con- tracted by Her in the Articles of the present Treaty.

ARTICLE XXI.

The present Treaty shall remain in force for the space of ten years, to date from the day of the ex- change of ratifications; and in case neither of the High Contracting Powers shall have notitied to the other, twelve months before the expiration of the said period of ten years, the intention to put an end to its operation, the Treaty shall continue in force for another year, and so on from year to year, until the expiration of a year, counting from the day on which one or other of the High Contracting Powers shall have'announced its intention to put an end toit. The High Contracting Powers reseiwe to them- selves the right to introduce by common consent into this Treaty, any modification which is not op posed to its spirit and principles, and the utility of which shall have been shown by experience.

ARTICLE XXII.

The present Treaty shall be ratified, and the ra- tifications shall be exchanged at Paris within the period of fifteen days, or sooner if possible.

In faith whereof, the respective Plenipotentiaries have signed it, and affixed thereto the seal of their

arms.

Done in duplicate at Paris, the twenty-third day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred anʼl sixty.

ARTICLE XX.

ARTICLE XXI.

Le présent Traité restera en vigueur pendant dix années à partir du jour de l'échange de ses ratifications; et dans le cas où aucune des deux Hantes Puissances Contractantes n'aurait notifié, douze mois avant l'expiration de la période de dix années, son intention d'en faire cesser les effets, le Traité continuera à rester en vigueur encore une année, et ainsi de suite, d'année en année, jusqu'à l'expiration d'une année à partir du jour où l'une ou l'autre des Hautes Puissances Contractantes l'aura dénoncé.

Les Hautes Puissances Contractantes se réser- vent la faculté d'introduire, d'un commun accord, dans ce Traité, toutes modifications qui ne serai- ent pas en opposition avec son esprit ou ses prin- cipes, et dont l'utilité serait démontrée par l'ex- périence.

ARTICLE XXII.

Le présent Traité sera ratifié, et les ratificati- ons en seront échangécs à Paris dans le délai de quinze jours, ou plus tôt si faire se peut.

En foi de quoi, les Plénipotentiaires respectifs l'ont signé, et y ont apposé le cachet de leurs

arines.

Fait en double expédition à Paris, le vingt- troisiéme jour de Janvier, de l'an de grace mil

huit cent soixante.
