CAPTAIN BRINE, CAPTAIN KANE AND GENTLEMEN OF THE HONGKONG VOLUNTEERS,
Your kind address, which I received yesterday, and your proposal to form the Guard of Honour to-day, have been most gratifying to both Lady Robinson and myself.
I assure you I have watched with great interest the birth and progress of the Volunteer movement here, and I now rejoice to observe the satisfactory footing upon which your Corps has been established. I feel confident that if you continue to devote yourselves with the same zeal and assiduity to your drill, your public spirit will result in the permanent establishment of a Force highly creditable to yourselves individually, and of lasting advantage to the Colony.
In the full expectation of this result I now for a short time bid you farewell, assuring you that it is both my own and Lady Robinson's earnest hope that on our return here next year, we may find the Corps in full vigour and efficiency, and the Members of it individually in the enjoyment of all health and happiness.
