CANTON FOREIGN COMMUNITY OF 1856.
Gentlemen,The amount of Interest accruing upon the Indemnity paid by the Chinese Govern- ment for the destruction of the property belonging to the late Canton Fire Brigade is Nine hundred and Ninety-five Dollars and Ninety-eight cents. As those amongst your number who continue to reside at Canton are known to feel much dis- satisfaction that no portion of the principal sum was voted to the re-establishment of a Fire Brigade for the protection of the Settlement at Shameen, I beg to propose that the amount above mentioned be left in the hands of H. M. Consul for that purpose, to which I believe it to be fully adequate. Should no objections to this course be intimated to me on or before the 15th February next, I shall consider myself exonerated from responsi- bility in regard to the sum in question.-I am, Gentlemen, your obedient Servant,
