THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 2ND JANUARY, 1864.

There are at present about 25 Public Hydrants daily at work, and upwards of 10 Private Houses and Public Buildings already supplied with water, (a list of which agreeably to your request I forwarded, or your information some days since.) The whole of the mains have also for some time past been kept almost constantly charged and ready for immediate use in cases of fire. There are 4 or 5 Public Hydrants in course of erection in the Tai-ping-shan District, and the whole of the stop cocks, Fire Plugs and Hydrants, require numbering and otherwise designating to correspond with a large map of the City (on which I am at present engaged) shewing the entire scheme as executed. I also propose to draw up a Memo, of the rules, &c., absolutely necessary to be observed in order to secure a proper and economical distribution of the water, when this is done His Excellency the Governor will be in a position to determine upon such other regulations as may be deemed necessary to the efficient management of the service.-I have the honor to remain, Sir, your obedient Servant,
